2-3 games in the CL and a lucky 2nd place at the WC(where Croatia didn't beat anybody in regular time of the knockout rounds) and you're the best player in the world nowadays.

lets be honest: people vote for players like Modric because they got bored of Ronaldo and Messi dominating this award.
They are still the best players around by a margin, even off form and in their age. Modric doesn‘t deserve it more than Sneijder 2010 or Ribery 2013, or had better seasons than them. He’s just lucky with his timing.

Salty or not, it really is the truth. Mbappe had a better season individually than Modric. And he actually won the WC, comprehensively.

The award is given based on playing decent performances in high achieving teams rather than being individually the quality standout.
