Messi's hunger has gone down the drain in the recent seasons while Ronaldo's seems to be going up always wanting more to win. Which is why Ronaldo at 33 is actually more sharp and works harder than Messi at 31.
Only thing Messi has over Ronaldo atm is raw talent, and that ain't enough. Ronaldo is fitter, works harder, is more motivated and embraces his role as the leader of his national team. Messi lacks in all these 4 areas, and can't just compensate that with talent. This level ain't La Liga vs Getafe.

They're only really supposed to use VAR when it's clear and obvious. There was definite contact, but enough to actually impede him? Not sure.
