World's best Defender?

I think Puyol is up there. His epic performances in big games(CL final,World Cup, El Clasicos) earn him massive points.

Vidic comes up to mind very very rapidly as well.

Pique absolutely.

Nesta is past it imo.

Pepe and Carvalho are decent as well.

But what about the big games? Those games count for so much more than ordinary games.

That's what I love about Puyol and especially about Iniesta.The bigger the game,the better they play.

As for Nesta and Rio,when was the last time that they have actually been on top of their games? I know they were immense before,but for more than a while now,they are underperforming.

I actually voted Nesta as I don't think there is anybody better when fit, but he has had his injury problems - expected at his age, which mean he isn't so reliable anymore.

The Puyol point I also agree with, which is why I really don't see the Pique being a liability/passenger argument at all. If anything I see him as the reliable, consistent, man to be counted on that makes up for Puyol's erratic style.

jam my man, you make a good point about Vidic. but for that "type" of defender there's none better.

anyway, as for Puyol's big game ability making up for his small game inability, obviously this is the case or he wouldn't still be at the club. but when ranking the finest defenders around, consistency has to be taken into account and Puyol just doesn't have that anymore. neither do Rio and Nesta which is why I don't really count them despite their clearly superior ability.

Piqué and Vidic are just on. damn near every single game.

of his type he is by far the best especially now that samuel is out, but for me is type of defender is too limited to a certain tactically setup, which is why i can't rate him as the best.

they are certainly more "pure" defenders with glorious all-around skillsets.
