Iniesta also.

I mean, I don't want to make a huge deal out of it, anyone could have missed, but I'm just surprised that he was the one to take it. Obviously now that he's missed it's easy to say "I knew he was gonna miss it! Why was he the one taking it in the first place?!"

Xavi needs to benched and a successor groomed. For me I think that Busquets or Sergei Roberto could fill in. A midfield of busi, iniesta and song would work well.

you shoudlve realized by now that xavi is finished, what a liability he has become to barca and spain

a legend will be a legend forever but thats not a reason to keep using him until we are completely fucked

Normally this should be where Thiago takes over and Cavi rests more this season, yet this idiot is blinded by his money hungry father, an unreachable wc goal and a trainer who will play Xavi over him even if he broke his leg.
Hey but we still have cesc!

It is not only Thiago's fault but Tito's. Xavi has been very poor this season but Tito didn't bench him.

I am glad to see some similar sentiment of Xavi here, I thought it would be blasphemy to almost everyone to claim he wasn't the best fit.

I don't think based on this performance Spain/Barca need to totally revamp what they do, don't want to overreact.

That being said, it seems that in Barca's/Spains current state, if they come across a gifted, athletic, pressing team who also has a good defence, Xavi becomes a defensive liability. Tonight's game reminded me of Barca vs. Bayern. Just got killed on the counterattacks, and both teams (Brazil, Bayern) have solid defences and great passing and counterattacks. I do think much of this has to do with poor back 4 play from both teams, something Barca will obviously need to address.

I think playing the possession style football is obviously Barca & Spain's strength & not to go away from it, but it would seem another midfielder who can pose more of a scoring threat & defend will balance the team much better.

My random musings...opinions?

my opinion if you ask me 1) start thiago, less matches for xavi
2) sell song, buy de rossi
3) try alternate formations / double pivote

if barca don't wake up and smell the coffee, we'll be doomed. all the top sides has adapted and know how to conquer barca/spain! we're already at a disadvantage because all of our players play long seasons and nearly all international matches. we need some physicality in the midfield to cope with this new brand. just like the bayern match, xavi, iniesta and busquets were so easily brushed off the ball. so much so that marcelo was running past iniesta and xavi into advanced positions ! pep started something he believed was the answer in a 3-4-3, but a back 3 with pique will only spell chaos.

Not unreachable after yesterday if anything :VdB: will need youth if he wants a high tempo game to help with the new play.
