Coutinho was bought for marketing reasons. After Neymar left, we didn't have a big player who had a contract with Nike, our main sponsor.
Barcelona's analytical department and Valverde were against this transfer.

Obviously, this is the most failed transfer in Barcelona's history.

As fergus says, there's been worse performers than Ibra. But parting with a lot of money AND prime Eto'o (who went on to be a key factor in Inter winning the treble, playing as more of a workhorse too) is one of the worst non-Chelsea, non-Man United deals in football history.

Lots of us knew at the time it was ridiculous also.

Honorable mention: Braithwaite, Alex Song (although he did have a good season here before becoming a fashion symbol), Umtiti's last years constantly injured (he was very good when he arrived though).

Lol at bold.

Romeu wasn't bad in the PL, but really those three players were never particularly good anyway. It depends if you're asking sheer terribleness of the player or paying too much for a player who's good but flops anyway eg Griezmann, Ibra, Coutinho etc.
