That's only partially true. While defensive game overall was maybe on higher level before "Messi's era" primarily because defenders were able to play more physically, other teams were not defending that much against Barca as they do now. Even poor Primera teams were not parking buses against us...

Pique isn't slow really. He just doesn't have top acceleration and agility, but when he runs in straight line he's not slow for CB. That said Laporte is faster.
