He has been a very good squad player but playing on the flank (Left back or LF) he has been wrecking havoc and really establishing himself in the team. He brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the team and I think he was a really good buy.

Perhaps Jordi Alba with Abidal/Maxwell into their 30's - I read recently he may be keen to come over in the not so distant future. Otherwise for our CBs I think/expect a La Masia grad to fill in Puyol's shoes (Fontas?), otherwise yes Hummels is a fantastic CB.

I wonder if the staff at Barca ever discuss the need for resting Alves. I mean the squad rotates just about everyone (bar Messi as well I think), but this man Alves must operate like a robot. I never see him get tired and he gets up for every game galloping down a flank.

It's hit and miss for every football club because no one can perfect it. Our misses are on a bigger scale because of the size of the club in Europe. The Ibra deal was horrific, but otherwise I'd say business as usual with wins/losses in the transfer market.
