1 - Marc-Andre ter Ansplant

DonAK

President of FC Barcelona
Agreed. But Stegen would be stupid to move imho. He has a career in front of him, many 24 years old keepers would kill to play CL with Barca and have the chance to do back to back titles - first time ever. And he'll be no1 at Barca sooner than 4 years.

He should give it a go 1 more season with the current plan. Reassess his position in the summer of 2017. He's actually in a good spot. Wins titles (actually won more titles than Bravo, some of them huge) with the best team in the world next to the greatest player ever maybe, while becoming a better keeper with each season that passes. It's not like he's losing the starting spot in Germany's NT, because he plays less than he'd want at Barca, is it?

I don't see a reason for him accepting this setup another year, unless he gets guarantees that he'll be the 1st choice GK in all three competitions in 2017. I bet you wouldn't either unless you got no ambition whatsoever.

I sure as hell wouldn't sit on my ass and wait if it's harming my potential. A GK like ter Stegen can easily play for just a prestigious club like Barca a few years forward if he sacrifices a bit of time to play regularly and hone his skills.

Several things.

1. For good or for worse, this setup, while he's not evolving in leaps and bounds, has helped in his development. He's better now than he was when he came. So, there is progress for him, even in this more of a part-time role for the time being. He should accept that at the moment, and try to make an impression if an opportunity arises in the league. If say Bravo gets injured again and he steps in, I want to see him giving confidence to the team. Not being one more problem in defence for us to handle.

2. There is no opening for him to make an immediate step to a team close to Barca's value. Bayern would be ideal for him, but they have Neuer. And Neuer will be their starting keeper for 5 more years or even more probably, following Kahn's footsteps. Suddenly, his options get limited, because going from Barca to play for an EL team like Liverpool or some other club is not going to bring him anything except more games. It's important to play more, but it's even more important what kind of games are you playing. Can you experience CL finals at Liverpool for example, anytime soon? Doubt it. That wouldn't be a step back. It would be something like 3-4 steps back.

I think people don't appreciate enough what high-level games Stegen is playing. It's the CL, pinnacle of club football. Bravo may have more games under his belt, but Stegen's playing the more important ones, the mighty decisive duels. He should value that more.

If I would be in his shoes, I would absolutely never leave a team like Barca. He'll be nuts to do it. He's the guaranteed no1 keeper of this team two years down the line if he continues like this. All he has to do is be smart and wait for his chance to be the no1.

Basically, do what Thiago didn't. Wait for his shot. It's not going to be gifted to him, that's for sure.

His presser is translated here: https://twitter.com/G14_en

Ter Stegen: "Thinking about leaving in the summer? Right now I'm not thinking about the future, I'm just thinking about tomorrow."

Ter Stegen: "I don't care about being called the GK of the future. That future can be far away. I care about winning tomorrow."

Those are the usual answer to those questions, but really hope we don't lose him.

There's many more quotes (presser still ongoing) to copy and paste, if anyone else can do it now...

Getting a little annoyed with his impatient attitude. Its been this way since he arrived.

What impatient attitude? He was asked questions and answered them. Players always want to play. It's best he's competitve than without ambition.

You can read between the lines that he feels he should be gk in all games, same as last year. He arrived thinking he would be #1 gk for Barca at age 21 then has always been slightly bothered by it, sometimes even commenting more direct about it.
Of course journalists are going to keep asking it but its quite clear he doesnt want another season like this after the summer. Time to decide.

Did you saw the presser? There weren't such things you are talking about. If anything, he was dismissive of those questions, but had to answer them anyway. And it wasn't his wife complaining to the press, last season, that he should start in the cl. When things were still turbulent.

If you had at least read all his quotes, you'd see this one as well:

Ter Stegen: "You can never be sure that you'll be the starter at a club like Barça. You always have to give the best version of yourself."

I think by dodging that question repeatedly he basically confirmed what we have been afraid of all along: That he is thinking about leaving, or at least he is not ruling that out.

That just sounds like typical stuff a player who is not content would say.
