It was a bad decision to try to catch the ball while also jumping because it was raining.

Yep, he could have done better than that. He misjudged the situation a little bit.

But so many things were wrong in that play that it's hard to blame only him. Also, he has credit with us right now.

That clearance was horrible, though... I think he hesitated to catch the ball because it was coming from Masch and that caused him to fumble it, which unfortunately resulted in a goal... Still had some other very good saves, so hopefully this doesn't affect him too much so he doesn't lose momentum, because he is probably at his best level since he's been in the club...

Kinda funny that now some say he was unlucky, when a few weeks ago there was no such thing as luck...

Literally no one said there is no such a thing as luck. Go back several pages and read the discussion again.

Man, it was the overall idea, not pointing fingers... I didn't mean it as a way to prove or disprove either camp, just that it's funny that luck, or lack of luck, is being brought up again...

No, it was not.

The overall idea was that Mats was RESPONSIBLE for making the saves, not being luck in those very specific situations.

No one said there is not luck in the game (as Bravo showed us when saved a shot with his foot, when jumping to the other side, or even Mats with Cavani's shot to the post, this week).

There is nothing funny (or surprising) at all about it when you don't misinterpret that discussion.

Uh? As I said, I'm not taking part in the luck discussion again... You even agreed with my definition of luck last time, I just find it funny that this is a recurring theme with ter Stegen for some reason, the guy can't catch a break...

Just by pointing it out, made you go into berserk mode, even when the only thing I said is that people is bringing luck into the debate once more...

Sorry to say but this game was again the typical Stegen-pattern.
He makes fantastic and vital saves, then he is clumsy or undecided in easier situations.

Whenever ANY opponent gets a corner kick against Barca, my throat becomes dry because MATS is simply below average in any corner situation.
Very rarely comes out, when comes he often misses, so most often stays on the line where he is already beaten if others make mistakes...

I think he's best when the action is fast and he has to rely purely on his instincts, in those circumstances he's a beast... But when there's a little time to think is when he looks undecided as you say... That's not say he's dumb or anything, just that the split second he takes to analyse the situation ends up betraying him, he should make his decision faster and to his credit he's done so when it comes to passing the ball with his feet...

On the other hand, defending corners has always been our weak spot and this has nothing to do with ter Stegen, obviously I wish he could help in that regard, but it's not something I would pinpoint on him or that I think is that important (when it comes to evaluating ter Stegen)... It was totally Alba's fault today in that corner, and while the GK could have come off his line, that's just a series of could-haves that involve the whole team... Don't get me wrong, my throat also becomes dry in every corner against us, but ter Stegen is not one of the top reasons why...

By the way, did he actually deflect the ball in the corner that led to the goal? It looked to me that he didn't touch it and the ref wrongly called a corner...

He is physically strong and quite tall. Thus he should more often try to come out in these fixed situations because otherwise his chances are even less.
Alba is short and he isn't a typically strong player with headers. He was facing our own goal whereas the attacker was already jumping. Little chance to jump the needed height when not facing the player who is already in the air. That's why the keeper - who should have clearly seen this situation - may have had tried to come out in order to close at least the angle of the header.
It was right on the line of the smaller box, where in theory the GK should be the one ruling the air.
Wasn't MATS fault but ideally could have tried more.

I agree that the entire defense is bad with handling corners (perhaps a bit better when Umtiti is there) but I still insist upon MATS being relatively weak when coming out for head-balls and often selects the solution to stay on the line where he can only do anything if he were very fortunate.
The much shorter Bravo was far better and more successful in decisions when to come out...

I've been saying he's poor at high balls and timid ever since he got extended run, it's too obvious with him. I think we are conceding more goals from corners/crosses than last 2 years exactly because of his poor command of area.

Valdes 2.0 .. Horrible in the air, Fantastic with feet, great in 1V1s, some spectacular saves, and then those ridiculous mistakes that could cost you a game.

Against Deportivo the team was playing horribly, but the first goal was all on him.

To leave this on an optimistic note, he did actually improve so that's a good thing.

How can the first goal was all on him? Mascherano failed to clear the ball, the distance where Masche foot contacted the ball to where Stegen stood was like 5 feet max! And most goalkeepers instinct in that situation would be to stop the ball going forward toward the goal, which Stegen did! Can't expect him to catch and hold onto the ball right after Masche s failed clearance or punch the ball away where it d be safer cuz just not enough time to react! the distance was so close n the ball headed toward the bottom right corner, not like it went straight at him!

i'm sorry but the goal is on him no matter how you try to put it .. Mascherano had to clear the ball and he succeded .. The ball went very slowly to the keeper and he failed .. Only excuse i would make for him is the ball being slippery because of the rain.

I'd like to see the goal again. At first look I thought he had to dive to ensure Mascherano's attempt at clearing the ball didn't go into the net and then he couldn't hold onto it.
