Not really. Its not a the goalkeepers fault even if he is beat on the nearpost because the defense shouldnt of let the attacker get that close in the first place.

Any keeper can get beat near post if the attacker is unobstructed and so close to goal.

Barçapocalypse NOW!
His passing was shit... I don't know about the goals, the first was deflected by Piqué because he was late and in the second Mariano slipped and got lucky...

Teams are taking advantage of how much Barca defer to MATS.

They press until ball goes back to him then sit off when he has ball as they want him to try one of those ridiculous passes that are almost costing goals every game.

Their is an arrogance at Barca about how good MATS is on the ball and it has got to point it is a weakness.

The shot was deflected. His positioning was good and Vinicius' shot would have went straight at him. Horrible defending in front of him caused the goal.
I agree with JamDav though. Do not know why the team puts him in that situation all the time. MAtS is asked to play about 20 to 30 perfect passes each game that a risky and difficult to put off. You won't find anyone capable of doing that every game.

He is our second best player and i do not blame the goals on him. The truth is no keeper should have as much pressure as he does.

First goal he was positioned perfectly for, Pique put the ball off course and deflected shots like that are never the fault of the keeper. Second goal was just pure luck on their part, striker slipped as he was taking the shot and it was just hard to read. Could have saved it if he was prepared to protect his near post, but still hard to lay blame on him for costing us there, especially considering it was once again laughable defense in front of him that created the chance in the first place.

As a keeper you're always taught to protect the near post. Quit making excuses for him.

Maybe when you're a little kid or playing sunday league soccer. At this level you have to position yourselves to also potentially make any far post saves too because the attackers are just that good in professional leagues.

You're welcome
I have been criticizing Ter Stegen in the past but won’t blame too much for the two goals as with the one against Napoli. First goal deflected off of Pique’s foot and the second where Mariano fumbled the ball in by slipping and having the ball come off his other foot. On many showed again how great his reflexes are.

Because "we are Barca".
We can't get the ball from our own half.

And then we can boot it upfield or pass to Mats.
Since we are Barca, we can't boot it upfield because it is ugly.
Also, since we are Barca, we don't have a target man in attack to boot a ball upfield towards him.
Due to a bad planning, we don't have any pace on wings to make a transition from defense to attack (like Ronnie, Guily, young Messi, Vinicius etc)

So, our only 3 options in the build up are:
1. Passing between midfielders, where we will make 10-20 costly mistakes per match
2. Waiting for Messi to drop to a CM and create something
3. Or pass to Mats

After 2012, our team and tactics died on so many levels.
And we became a horrible, one dimensional and predictable team saved by Messi.

In attack: we only play through the middle (since "we are Barca", lol)
We don't play crosses, headers, corners, long balls, counters.
In a build up: we can't use long balls or counters.

Since 2012, we are building a team to play through the middle and nothing else.
It worked for some time with all time greats like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busi, Alves.

But since we are stuck in time for 10 years, today we have this comical set of tactics and commical set of players who:
1. Can't score against any decent team on away matches for years
2. And who will concede 2-3-4 goals by everyone on away matches

We will need to go back to our roots.
But not to Pep's roots, but to Rijkaard's roots, when a team had several different attacking (possession, counters, crosses, headers, long balls, counters, longshots) and build up options (possession and a true CAM playmaker and a goalscorer Deco, counters for fast players Ronnie, Etoo, Guily and Messi, long balls to Etoo or Larsson, crosses and headers to Etoo or Larsson, build up through midfielders Xavi and Deco, a playmaking fullbacks like Van Bronckhorst or creating through a LW playmaker Ronnie).

Our team is a mess on so many levels.
It will take years of PERFECT decisions to fix all of this what happened in the last 10 years.

I'm not criticizing his spirit or effort. I'm just saying you can't give up goals like those at your near post. He made an amazing save earlier in the match, so I know effort isn't it. The first one gets a slight pass because of the deflection, but the second has to be saved.
