1 - Marc-Andre ter Stegen

We weren't humiliated in the CL because of individual mistakes, by Ter Stegen nor by any other player. We were humiliated because we played arrogant football with no intensity. We were ran out of the pitch over and over again.

It is a bit ironic blaming Ter Stegen for those failures, when he was the one insisting on more intensity in training sessions, while Messi was obviously resistant to change.

Sure, but maybe he should try saving some shots for a change as well.

He cannot even command the defence properly or pay attention like when Liverpool scored off that corner. He's barely played this season, but was still fumbling the ball vs. Monaco in the group stage match.

He's simply ass under pressure.

There's many reasons and Static is one of them.

As shit as we were sometimes, a CL winning side simply has to rely on its goalkeeper turning clutch at some crucial moment to save the team. This bastard never did anything remotely close to that. He always fucked up when we needed him the most. Benfica game where we received the red card, put him on goal and there is no fucking chance we are winning the game.

When he eats 4 goals in big CL games basically every season it's hard not to blame him. And he would never really have any good saves to make up for it. We always conceded as much as the opponent created because we have no goalkeeper. When Real gets embarrassed you can almost always make a claim it'd be 3-4 goals more if not for Courtois, that's when a goalkeeper should receive less blame. But if almost every good attempt from the opponent is a goal, goalkeeper deserves heavy criticism.

It's easy to run away from the criticism saying others were shit too. It doesn't justify what he was doing on regular in CL. Nobody was consistently as shit in CL as he was, he has almost no memorabe CL performances in 10 years at the club (except in a negative way, he did really have one of the worst goalkeeping performances in CL history when he conceded 8 to Bayern - it's quite memorable).

Christ, there is some severe retconning going on here. It is now accepted truth that Ter Stegen was completely shit for all those years? That's not even remotely true. For some of those seasons, it was not an unpopular opinion that he was our next best player after Messi.

I'm not saying he has been an extraordinary goalkeeper throughout his career. I have my own frustrations with him. But claiming that he's some big culprit in our recent lack of success is a dishonesty that Barca fans have decided to allow themselves because it satisfies a hatred that is much more recent in source.

He was good in the league, against footballers with inferior technique and ability. I give him that. I consider him to be the best player in 22/23 league win, for example.

But I really don't believe anybody who consistently watched Barça since his arrival considered him to be one of our best players in CL at any point.

A goalkeeper who can't perform on all fronts is not a Barça level goalkeeper, though. Who is either in ability or mentality too weak to prove a point against the best players, he should be nowhere near a Barça shirt.

Give me one big match from him in the Champions League in a KO game in the last five years.

Now do the same with guys like Oblak, Alisson and Courtois.

You guys love to make up excuses for ter Stegen. People don't hate him or dislike him due to external reasons. It's because he's one of the least clutch and worst CL GKs we have seen.

He'd had some very good seasons in the league like when we won the league recently where he was one of our best players, but he's consistently mediocre in Europe.

His only notable save or moment in Europe is still from his debut season for us.

I swear that list changes every season, based on recency bias. Maybe apart from Courtois, who is considered a living God around here.

But what the fuck am I thinking, even that bum Lunin was considered top 3 last season.

Those three are pretty much the standard. All have had multiple games of big saves keeping their teams in the game/tie.
Meanwhile our guy who is one of the top paid GKs in the World cannot make a save and keep shipping in goals like he's Andre Onana.

Everyone want to complain and whine about the team's underwhelming performances in Europe, but some of you get mad when it's pointed out how ter Stegen is consistently shit in those games as well.

Pretty much the standard? Oblak and Alisson have been inconsistent the last few seasons. Alisson turned it around this season, but it's mainly due to that PSG tie that people are calling him one of the best around again.

Inconsistent is one thing, consistently underwhelming is another. @DonAK said those players had memorable games, not that they don't have bad ones.
