Valdes has told the club that he won't stay and will leave this summer. Tito failed to convince him to extend his contract or even to stay fro next season. A press conference will be scheduled in the coming weeks where Valdes will explain everything. Says SPORT

Joker has a contract, but I guess with pro-footballers these days the contract aint worth the paper it's written on. How quick would he get a lawyer if we broke the contract?

Good riddance!

Without knowing further specifics of his contract it's not easy to determine whether there is a breach of contract. Hardly doubt there is, in this case. In addition, in this case it would make sense for Barça to cash in on him in order to receive a fee, instead of seeing him walk out on the Bosman rule.

In most of the the Association Football contracts there are certain boilerplates that regulate the specific transfer related conduct and govern the rules of that transfer.

Article 17 of the FIFA Transfer Regulations stipulates that players can unilaterally cancel their contract with their club after a certain protected period has expired if an amount of compensation is paid to their original club. Further, due to Valdés being 31 now, for players over the age of 28, the protected period for their contract is two years, meaning they will be able to unilaterally terminate their contract when they are two years into it.

Hence, Valdés is fully entitled to unilaterally terminate his current contract, while the club acquiring his services will pay Barça the sum in form of indemnity.

As I said, the players' contracts are not worth the paper they're written on.

And...if the joker was to pick up a serious injury NOW that would keep him out of football for a year...you bet he'd want to sit on the sidelines at Barca picking up his money.

Certain players are like whores...no respect for the playing punter, and lie back and take the money.

If ANY player can walk away from a contract he has signed with a year left, JUST because he is over 30, there is something skewed in the contract system for players!

By the way, lets just see how good he is playing behind a team that DOESN'T have over 60% of the ball so that he is in action more and more.

With all due respect, you seem to have no grasp of how contract law actually operates.

When a contract is made between the two parties, regardless of its nature, it sets out that it should be seen through with good faith while stipulating certain specifics that apply in case of change of circumstances affecting either of the party. Such distinctive provisions regulate various courses of conduct such as warranties the two parties to the contract give each other, liabilities when in breach of contract and indemnities to guarantee an adequate, swift and proportional compensation in case of fundamental change of circumstances (these vary quite a bit).

Calling Valdés a "whore" is nothing short of a knee-jerk reaction, considering he has given the club 11 years and is looking for a new challenge. In addition to that, I find quite interesting the fact that there have been rumours concerning legacy players leaving exactly a year from Pep's departure, hinting that not all players are happy with the current board decision-making wise.

Further, any player can walk away from the contract, after three years into his contract while under 28, and two years into his contract when over 28, exactly due to the Webster ruling by the European Court of Justice. Clubs cannot force players to see through their distinctive contracts, because it would grant the clubs a stronger leverage in negotiations while nullifying the effects of the Webster ruling. Another general principle of contract law is that the weaker party, the employee (footballer), should be protected over the employer (the club), which in this case holds truth.

Therefore, players in weaker position have the ability to buy their contracts out given they will agree on the specifics of indemnity between their current clubs. This can also be agreed by the player's future club and thus the matter is usually settled accordingly. Lastly, cashing in on Valdés now makes perfect economic sense since he would walk out on Bosman after 2013-2014, which would leave Barça with diddly-squat.

Thanks for the contract law lesson.

I didn't call VV a whore, I said, 'Certain players are like whores...' - where does that say VV is a whore?

Implied interpretation and the connotation of the previous post would strongly support such a conclusion. However, if that was not your initial intention then apologies all around.

If he goes to Monaco, all the trying-different-cultures will finally be exposed as bs for the public. There's clearly something else in the way.

Except "new cultures" usually is boilerplate bs, which in itself is hardly surprising.

Probably true but we'll see where he ends up...Still think the Premiership is likely

Don't we pay him pretty high wages though? According to google (not the most reliable source, I know), he earns 6 million euros a year, as much as Buffon.
I doubt Monaco would pay him more, considering he isn't that great (not as bad as some would have you believe, but not that great either). Then again, they do have a sugar daddy owner, so who knows...

Not necessarily. He would play all his games in France- not different enough for you?

Also, as a keeper, he has many years left in his career. Monaco for a few years, then somewhere else.

It does sound like Monaco is intending to build a galaticos team to compete with PSG for the title. Valdes may have intended to move elsewhere, but Monaco may be making an offer that is tempting him with a group of star players and a good challenge.

TBH, I completely understand where Valdes is coming from. It's not the same as a Barça outfield player, where the style and level of play is unlikely to be matched elsewhere. While Valdes has played his role in the Barça system, he sees very little of the ball, and has pretty much "been there, done that." Why wouldn't he want to challenge himself, after half his career, with something different than tiki-taka possession football? Or want to see how he performs with a more traditional strong back four?

All the power to him, I say.
