Thank God. Perhaps the worst continually selected keeper I have seen at Barcelona. Amazed he was so respected. So easily beaten at his near post, poor instincts, absolutely terrible quality keeper for such a big club.

+1

thank god , and hope they go after a decent choice this time

yep but still he is not as good as he used to be and is a liability now...better get rid of him

Give this a read. I'ts an article by Paul Morrissey which I posted about 2 pages back.

It summarises why Valdes is leaving and that the core reason is his lack of recognition which is clearly evident by comments made here. I understand where you guys are coming from though. Since the Pep era Valdes has had to become a very unique goalkeeper and as a result of our play he spends many matches doing nothing as the opposition have no shots, then suddenly he may be called into making a save that he is not prepared for. Of course playing a sweeper role requires a special talent which most keepers would fail to grasp and inevitably leads to mistakes. If Pep had never been given the job then I think Valdes may have stayed with us. Been a Barca keeper under our current system is not an envious position so don't be surprised if the next keeper has similar problems.

I hope that wherever he goes he can get the recognition he deserves. After the 06 final he was seen as a hero and an integral part of our success. He deserves to have that recognition once again.

We need someone who has all the basics first and formost. Valdes was often easily beaten in his career at barcelona, especially in areas keepers are taught from a young age to guard with their lives (near post etc). Once we find a keeper with the basics, than if he has talent on top of that, we are good to go. Valdes was not even Rael Madrid quality.

I would like someone with the potential to be like Júlio César or Buffon. Not some talentless idiot like Stekelenburg.

Good points, I think the disdain for him got into his head a little, because he was much better in his younger days. I remember in particular the 06 CL final where he basically denied Henry 3 goals with some massive saves. Even if he is from Catalunya, who would want to remain in that kind of environment where there is this subtle displeasure with your effort. Some guys can resist it but others can't, especially if they are being singled out.

So the guy is the only flop in the G.K position among top clubs and is one of the best paid footballers in barca and he wants more recognition? You don't ask for recognition, you earn it. It's not our fault that he has only been a barca keeper cause he's catalan. What an arrogant person to demand something you don't deserve. I heard the "recognition" he wanted was to get paid the same as xavi and iniesta.

On and by the way, he's also demanding that he is let go for free as part of his "recognition." The thing is, no one has put an offer for Valdez so he wants to be given a free pass to sign for any club he wants without barca receiving a dime. If Barca had received an offer for Valdes, we could sell him but no one is offering nothing for this guy. Now if he's free I'm sure many teams could come by and offer him a contract. I say let him sit on the bench for the rest of his contract if he doesn't want to continue playing for barca.

Personally I definitely think people are underestimating Valdés' role. He is not the best keeper, but we've seen him doing some amazing things this season. Valdés in recent seasons was used as a sweeper and he did it almost flawlessly. His passing game is spot on. For a team that's almost entirely about passing, he has been the best fit for our team... But I believe recently he also has been exposed as not being the best keeper.
