Well, to be honest, Messi did a few more masses than usual yesterday. Passing the ball, though, is not one of his best attributes. He is more a machine that works straight for the goal. His young age probably and speed narrows his wide angle vision which can make him seem very selfish.

pfft...

Its one of his criminally most underrated attributes...

wrong.

he is got great vision, and great playmaking abilities if he never reaches the 20+ assists (he is always int he 1x degits) mark is because of the others' wastfulness so the team has to rely on him most of the time for goals.

i reallllly dont think messi is selfish. I think messi is actually one of the smartest forwards in todays time. Being selfish would be trying to get a goal even if it is much easier to pass to your teammate (hello cr7). But when messi is in a sticky situation he will often pass it. The times he doesnt pass it is because he has a higher chance of getting a goal than if he did in my opinion. It seems to me everytime he does a brilliant pass, whoever receives the ball seems to miss the shot anyway. Then again this could be because barcelona kind of lack good finishers, besides messi and villa not many of the other players are good at getting goals. Pedro is good but he hasnt been playing lately and xavi/iniesta while brilliant arent known for their finishing capability. Then theres other people like keita, masherano, sergio.b who arent really finishers either.

So unless messi can find villa, which when he does he often does play the pass, it is probably much better for him to take it than to pass to the other guys which arent really finishers.

Agree. His selfishness leads to goals and victories. CR leads to dives and crying child behaviour after he is not bribed with free kick or penalty.

messi's ability to balance the selfish and selfless parts of his game is one of the major reasons why he is the greatest player in the world.

Selfishness? He's been providing his teammates with quality passes which often lead to goalscoring opportunities. Had Villa been in his goalscoring form, Messi would be topping the assists chart.
And just to put it in perspective: His usual partners in attack (Iniesta and Villa) have less assists than Messi.

The good
He is selfish for sure,it was more obvious in the last 2 games but if you are an attacker and if you have Messi's talent then you should be Selfish,if he wasnt Selfish,he couldnt have been half the player he is now.

Yeah, good post Bojan. When a player has the ability to dribble past all the defenders and pass the ball into the net, you wouldn't really call him selfish if he keeps the ball longer than others. He has always been assisting others and setting goals up. To other players it may look selfish when they are trying to hold on to the ball when 2/3 defenders surround them and they still don't pass it to someone else, with Messi it is normal to get away with ball with the entire defense line trying to get a piece of him. Messi is an incredibly smart player, so I think he knows exactly when to pass or do those one twos. He is rather one of the most selfless players out there. Even against Copenhagen, he tried to find Villa many times. That one amazing pass that found Villa in the box could have led to a goal if Villa's first touch was craftier.

So, if Leo goes off again as he did last March does this mean when he earns a pk, he'll give it to Villa too? :p
