Like Frank was a genius for introducing him on the right wing, Pep can have all the credit in the world for giving him that free role in the middle. It worked in the bernabue, and it sure as hell worked last night. Slow pace, short passes, one-twos, triangles, and then the sudden burst into the box. And to top it all a header against the best defence in the world (and against ane english team). It was beautiful. It was magical.

Nice post GJ, Messi wasn't at his most spectacular last night but he passed the ball very well, created space exceptionally and his movement for the goal was top notch before a beautiful HEADER for the finish. VIVA MESSI!

While Messi is criticised 24/7 by mostly English or the English-supporting for his lack of 'completeness' as a player, he managed to score a headed goal, being the shortest player on the pitch, on the biggest scene possible in club football. Judging by this season, he cannot be criticised because he has scored with his right, his left, his head, penalties and a free kick. And he scored 9 goals in the Champions League, which beats Ronaldo's 8 last year
Now it is obviously unfair to say that scoring that header will automatically turn him into a complete player. He still is so short and just physically the odds are against him when it comes to aerial play. But the fact that he scored a header in a CL Final proves just how he is able to defy odds and perform on the big scene, and small scene alike.
He is 21 years old, the best football player in the world, and he is on the way to becoming the best footballer ever. He definitely has potential to achieve that.

Messi was better than ronaldo in the final. But for me, the man of the match is either xavi or iniesta. They controlled the whole game. Also, Messi deserved to be world best player of the year. I'm so proud that barca youth system produced many talents.. Great job! :)

it's almost unthinkable that he will miss the ballon d'or.

or iniesta gets it, i don't think messi would really mind if it goes to iniesta.

his shoe sponsor must be a bit annoyed as well. he gets new shoes and the kid scores a header

 That's why to make up for it, he ran with the shoe in his hand after scoring - hoping it would put an ear to ear smile on his sponsors' faces!!

I don't think Adidas could have advertised their boot any better. Messi, argueably the best player in the world, just happens to score the 2nd goal in a 2-0 win of the Champions League final and his boot falls off, which he just happens to remember to pick up and then kiss it....Cha-ching!

There is no way he'll not be crowned Fifa World Player of the Year or Ballon d'Or. Iniesta should be second though with Xavi 3rd. I don't care if it's one sided, Iniesta and Xavi winning the European Cup at International and Club level can not be ignored.

Yea, I agree with you about Xavi and Iniesta getting 2nd and 3rd places for the FIFA World Player of the year and Ballon d'or. Both of them have been phenomenal and deserve to be the 2nd and 3rd best player of the year. Imo, Xavi should be 2nd and Iniesta 3rd. Xavi has dictated the game from the midfield for the entire season and of course Iniesta has been sensational. Messi looks most likely to win the Player of the year and yes Adidas could not have had a better advertisement for those shoes.

It was nice to see Messi's shot from distance in the final which whisked past VDS's crossbar. There was real power behind the shot. It's good to see him add this new dimension to his game.
