He has a lot of accidental assists

What i was thinking, so many are unintentional it rather makes a mockery of using assists as a metric. I find assists a rather pointless stat anyways, especially when nothing is given to say a player whom dribbles past 3 then passes it to a player who does a 2yard pass for an assist.

That's true. There should be statistics for 2nd assists too.

Two assists today - for Neymar (deflected) and Pedro (deflected). So zero OPTA assists...

Performance on a NT has been important in the past, for reasons that are now outdated. It used to be that national team competitions were, by far, the pinnacle of football. Good nationals teams were miles better than any club. So if someone dominated in club football but did not do well for his national team, you actually had NO evidence that that player was capable of dominating top opposition. So you could not truly call that player the best. While that metric still suffered from a really low sample size (not to mention that some players are from countries with bad teams so they have no chance), it really was the ONLY way of measuring how a player did against the best of the best. So people had to forgive the massive flaws in using it as a metric.

But now it is completely different. The Champions League is the best competition in the world. Top CL teams would wipe the floor with top national teams. How one competes in the CL is now better evidence of how someone does against top opposition. And the CL does not suffer from the giant flaws that using NT performance does. There is a much larger sample size of matches, since the tournament involves more matches and is played every year. And it doesn't matter what country you are actually from; if you are a great player, you WILL end up on a team competing in the CL. Simply put, the Champions League is OBVIOUSLY a better way of measuring how good a player is than NT performance.

Of course, NT performance also matters, simply because everything matters. Even performance in the Copa Del Rey still matters. And tournaments like the World Cup have an added significance to the public. But it doesn't really show us all that much about a footballer's quality. For instance, we wouldn't say that the Germany defense is actually good enough to shut Messi down. We know from the CL that those same defenders have gotten destroyed by Messi (prime example: the last Bayern match). And we wouldn't say that the WC final shows Messi chokes in big matches. We know that he has scored in two CL finals and is the top scorer in El Clasico. So realistically, the WC final simply shows us how a player played in ONE important, somewhat-high-quality match. But we have so many more data points now of important, high-quality matches that the WC final is simply not as important a piece of information.

So, antonnn, if Messi was Australian, he could never be the best ever, because the Australian nt sucks? That's why this argument is pure bs. Times are different too. You don't see a nt dominating, as it happened in the past.

Messi is already the 2nd best goalscorer for Argentina too. And the argies have tradition and all, but it's been a while since they had a very good team.

The biggest flaw in his logic: if Palacio and Higuain scored, Messi could be considered the undisputed best player.

So, the fate of a genius on the hands (foots) of two average players.

WC argument served well 20+ years ago when basically 4-5 teams tossed themselves the cup, football was played at 40% the speed & strength of nowadays, key players stayed on their countries powering their own national leagues and club seasons were short.

If you look at it by just logic, you are comparing a team performance that compete every 4 years for 3 matches at worst and 7 matches at best (qualifiers/continental cups aside) v/s teams that play a whole season worth of 2 tournaments & every-week league game at the same time.

This is not the same era of football in which one-man show dominated, you actually need solid squads overall.

Messi is the goat. The WC argument is useless, arbeloa has one .. that should tell you something.

Again, if the WC was every year, i'm sure Messi would have 2 or 3, it's like when people were saying he can't score on Neuer after he faced him just 3 times.

:rockon::rockon::rockon:

Who every argues against this fact probably does not truly appreciate Messi's capabilities.

Just another piece of disgusting Chiringuito. Program after Messi shines vs Bayern, should they talk about the game? Should they talk about the performance? Nope. Lets hate on Pep and lets play and manipulate a video of a 17 year old Messi on a comedy show being pranked, and lets call it "humiliating" and lets say the video is "unpublished".

I don't condone violence to solve problems, but if there are a group of people that deserved to be jumped in a dark alley and beaten to a pulp, it's these fuckers.
