Hate to break it to you but this is a very outdated way of thinking. International football isn't the pinnacle anymore, back in the 70's it was the true test of a player but nowadays club football and the champions league is the highest level of the game. Teams like Madrid, Bayern and Barcelona are a culmination of the very best players in the world. They have world class players from back to front.
Some people will still hold true that he has to win a WC, but this is a load of bollix. The world cup is a 7 game tournament every 4 years, it doesn't happen often enough to judge a players career on. In the end his only useful attacking team-mate got inured (Di maria) and Aguero and Higuain flopped. Btw Maradona never won the European cup with Napoli, so if I'm going to have a narrow view of football then how about I declare Maradona can never be considered the greatest without this trophy...
Messi has yet to amaze at the wc with spectacular performances like the other greats have, sadly some will stick with that argument for a long time.

And he was burned out as well, at rly bad physical condition.
I never see that reason in the other teams' forums I visit, only very select few cristiano fanboys say that now.
Everyone sees Messi as an all time great and many neutral people as the GOAT.

Been marked heavily by at least 3 men all the time. Sociedad's boeing was probably the most organized we've faced this season on par with Atleti's.

Lets be realistic, it was not just Messi scoring goals that helped Argentina advance, it was their collective defense that equally helped too, which surprised many because they thought Argentina was gonna be a counter attack team.
I remember watching the WC qualification games, that Messi looked amazing with Argentina, then the WC came and he was nowhere near as good. He scored some excellent goals, but him and Argentina disappointed in the WC in terms of good football.
