Joint fifth with Lahm in the UEFA Best Player in Europe voting. Ronaldo, Robben, Neuer and Muller were all ahead of him. The three previous winners of the award were Messi, Iniesta and Ribery.

What exactly counts for this award, only uefa competitions right?

I'm not even sure anymore, considering James was at 7th. It's voted by European journalists, that's all that is certain. There will be a live vote again on Aug 28 to decide the winner and order of top 3.

Also, Messi is in fact really far behind. 4th place Muller had 39 votes, while fifth place Lahm and Messi had 24 votes.

Ronaldo was only marginally better than Messi individually last season, with more goals.

Robben had a terrific WC, but not sure what he did in the 13/14 season that got him in the final 3.

Not to mention James Rodriguez.

with all injuries he suffered last season, Messi still managed more goals than all players except Cristiano! leading his country to WC Final only losing due to small details/bad luck in the final! Can't see why any of the above players expect CR is ahead of him! Especially Robben, yes he was good at the Wc but Messi was even better!

Only reasons that might explain this:
1- Too much hate, its unreal and you can see it after he got Golden Ball after WC Final!
2- Messi set so high standards that people always expect better from him and now even scoring 48 goals in a season isn't enough although its better than the best season of LEGENDS like Henry Raul DelPiero VanBasten Ibra etc...

Robben was bayern best player last year (together with Lahm maybe) and bayern won the domestic double so i kinda understand him getting votes but Muller ahead of him i don't agree with.

The best Bayern player in the 13/14 season perhaps, but that doesn't say much, as Robben didn't stand out that much compared to other Bayern players, in my opinion.

Agreed with you on Mueller. Again terrific WC but I didn't remember his 13/14 season was that great to be ranked ahead of Messi. Hence my comment on short term memory.

Has there been any mention of Messi's health/vomiting issues as of late? I really hope that issue is put to bed this season. It just seems terrible and it's not good to look at as a fan. Also hope to see him in top shape again.

I think that's a normal situation for Messi now, no human being should vomit like that but as long as nobody comes out and says its a serious issue that effects his game we should give that problem zero importance.
