Messi was great? NO! Not for his standard. And definitely not for his normal fighting spirit. It's frustrating seeing Messi like that!

Some people are Messi rather than Barca or even football fans. It's no shame accepting that a player had a better year than Messi. It should provide him with a new goal, make him realise that he is solely responsible for his general play and see his mistakes over this season. If Real will win CL this year, I don't see how CR will miss out on a new Ballon d'Or, apart from some sensational World Cup performance from someone else.

Can someone tell me why Ronaldo has had a better 2014 than Messi? I just don't get it. Based on what?

I am a Barca fan first and Messi fan second, for the record.

Based on media hype, which is what decides Ballon d'Or these days... Not saying that recent winners are underserved, but we all know by now that award is just a popularity contest...

Ronaldo's team is doing better at the moment. Which gives the perception that Messi has declined or isn't putting up similar or better numbers than Ronaldo. It's all about perception and where both teams are at right now.

I miss this Messi, yesterday we saw flashes of how good he can be if he wants to.
Hope he is able to reach that level in Brazil.

Sweet Jesus, he was unplayable at times yesterday with his dribbles.

Messi has stepped up his movement the last couple of games, not doing his walking fencepost imitation. I have to believe it has to do with whatever underlying condition is causing his vomiting (which, of course, Barça would never make public to an opponent). He's been far more mobile, and as a result, Barça's passing has been much more inside the lines and less around the periphery than when Messi has left a big empty hole.

The midfielders have been unwilling to pass to Messi when he's been static standing between the two centerbacks, for fear of being picked off, but now that's he's moving again, they are willing to put the ball to his feet even if he has markers. They may have been a bit too generous passing to him in the Getafe game, and I don't blame Messi for his dispossessions. He needs to trust that the midfielders pass him the ball when he has enough room to turn and isn't immediately triple-teamed. As long as he keeps moving, they will find the right balance of risk.
