10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Just do realize that spamming 2010 Messi videos doesnt really mean much for this discussion, right?

Sneijder : treble, superb player < Xavi : liga, world cup, all time great midfielder < Messi : Liga, best player ever.

2010 was the year when it became clear that Messi was a GOAT contender, or simply the GOAT already. He got the award based on this. If not him, it should have been Xavi. But it should have been him, as the ballon pretends to reward individual performances, hahaha...

Blatter fucking up won him the award in 2013, Reals fluke cl wins won him the other two. Also a lot of marketing, pr campaigns and uncle flo checks.
People in the future will use this to prove the domination of the Messi/cr7 era when in reality its a total joke. Bar 2008 and a few moments when Messi was injured and late 2014 he could never touch Messi and the whole thing has been a marketing hype job.

You should read the comments here in Italy: "well deserved, he LED Real Madrid and Portugal to CL and Euro winning, 35 goals in 36 games, by far the best player in the World" etc. etc.
People have their head up to their ass, they don't even see the actual games they are talking about and judge only by name and power of sponsor/media. And the sad part is that, out of 100 people, there are 4 or 5 who actually try to say the truth but they are casted out as ignorants and the others laugh at them.

I am truly disgusted.

It's even worse in India . It's really painful after watching both play weak in and out and then has to tolerate all the shit logic's by them without even watching the match's :(

I cant believe Morten is arguing Leo didnt deseve it in 2010.

Yes Wesley won the treble, Xaviesta wre amazing...

But Messi in 2010 was one of the greatest individual seasons a player has EVER had in the history of this sport, performance wise.

Messi that year was shocking. No other player has ever performed as he did for a year like he did in 2010.
Ignorant insult to football itself downplaying that.

This whole thing where a player has to win titles ..that are based on a team game to win an individual award is stupid.

Ronaldos theatrics are what gets him media attention and he plays to that. He was utter shit in both big finals and every real football fan knows that.

We have to acknowledge a few good things about Cristiano in 2016:
- He scored the decisive goal in the Clasico, when Alves was still flailing in the air.
- He played well against Wolfsburg when RM had to come from behind at home
- He converted the final Penalty in the CL final against Atletico, when it counted
- He played well for Portugal in the Semifinal of the European Championship (although Bale probably overshadowed him. Poor Bale, he had no support in that game)

Antoine Griezmann could have taken it away from Cristiano both in the CL and Euro finals - but he did not.

As to who is the world's best player, there is no discussion.
Here are the numbers:

CR7 has 51 goals and 17 assists
Leo has 58 goals and 32 assists (and lots of additional passes that created goal chances for Barcelona and Argentina)

It's not even close.

But Messi has one weakness: He is not a good traveler across time zones.
Somebody should teach him how to prevent and overcome jet lag, and perhaps calm down after all the excitement with Argentina NT matches.
In my opinion, he lost the ballon d'or 2016 because of jet lag: Barca lost the Clasico, and then suffered the CL loss to Atletico because Messi, Suarez and Neymar needed 2 weeks to recover their form.

It's a serious problem and Luis Enrique needs to deal with it: Whenever the MSN travel home and play with their respective NT's, Barca suffers after their return to Barcelona.

I strongly feel the B d'or shouldn't be given for scoring a penalty, regardless the importance of it.

You are right but it's bad we don't ever see defenders on the list.
Football is NOT meant for attackers only and counted by the goals scored.
In this result-oriented world or age a Beckenbauer or a Bobby Moore (or Kaka, or Zico, etc.) would have never gotten it, and that's a sad change...

People forget that ballon d'or is offered by a company , lucrative one " magazine " .. the mass appeal is a real factor. there are several factors taken into consideration and actual football is just one, when football should be the only factor ( ideal world)

Even many members of the press hardly watch most of the games, just highlights and the big games.
But i had a look on reddit yesterday and the reactions are very mixed, i'd say maybe more then half the people taught the results of this award are a joke/didn't agree with the result.
Can't remember it ever being this controversial.

No, the ballon d'or is voted on by journalists from all over the world. And Messi has more than enough mass appeal.

The real factor is a mix of stupidity, cowardness and corruption
