Since the Villareal match in early December, he's been playing at 50-60% intensity in almost half the matches he has played. I guess the Lyon match will give us a good idea of what his top level is and what to expect from him in the CL knockout stages

I don't think that's true. Unless you have stats to prove his intensity levels. I think he does the same in almost every match bar the ones where he runs a little extra like sevilla second leg. In that game he was pressing and tracking back a little more when they only needed a goal to go through.

I'm not sure where to find the stats but I'm confident that his sprints and distance covered against Villareal, Tottenham, Eibar, Valencia, or Real yesterday would be well below his average.

There's nothing wrong with his fitness. Real played some good defense to keep Messi from getting too many chances.

It is clear that Messi demanded, or the team decided, that he would not start the first leg of Copa matches this season. This is strategy for the long, 3 competition season for a player who is now over 30.

No point having him out there if he cannot even dribble at full speed. The last couple of games he has barely bothered to dribble which is very unlike him.

Its not healthy for messi to get rested that much, a player need conistent gametime to be at his toplevel.
