Because Xavi took a lot of them, Ronaldo rarely let anyone else have a go no matter how far out it was.

Ronaldo was a specialist at an early age. Especially at United and the early years in Madrid. After that he somehow became terrible with it.
Messi didnt take few due to seniority and only in recent years has suddenly developed himself into juninho.

He is scoring like 7 goals a season now from freekicks. St this rate he will end up with 70+ In a few years.
I dont know the all time stats bit I have a feeling the likes of great freekick takers like Pirlo, Juninho, Beckham, Dinho, Koeman,Van hooydonck, Zico are at that tier.
Its certainly a joy to watch though.

I think theres two person at 70s (juninho and pele), the rest of them are at 60s at most. At this rate he could at least be in the 60s club.

It really depends on how long he is going to play. It looks like his free kick ability isn't influenced by age, and if, he can just specialize near box free kicks if his legs get weaker.

On another note, long time ago, i read something about how maradona (who was a really great free kick taker) showed Messi how to shoot them under training at his stint a national trainer. Also think there is video/documentary on youtube of maradona shooting/showing him. Maybe he really did learn a thing or two from him.

I question pele’s stats. 60’s club should be easily reached at this rate within 2 years. But like people say it all depends how long he will end up playing.
At this point I dont even want to think about his retirement since he is still so very good.

Zico has the most, I think.

Even if Messi reaches those high numbers of FK goals scored (I don't think he will), he won't be comparable in terms of FK skill to Juninho. Juninho could score from anywhere on the pitch. Messi is better closer to the edge of the box.

I wonder how his conversion rates have changed over the years. That's also a relevant stat.

Well if he gets same numbers and better conversation rate, then that would be valid argument for messi being the better one. Even tho he can't score a 40m screamer.

Messi won't get a high conversion rate. He shoots from impossible distances with his curled shots.
Sometimes the better option is to whip it in.

That's pure bull shit man - The pothead's advise to Leo (during 2010 WC) was to tell the ball in its ears where he wants it to go! What the fcuk

Well i don't know, thats just what i read. But wasn't 2010 also the year his free kick skills picked up a level or two? It may then very well be coincidental, but Maradona was a masterful free kick taker, and iirc his skill was still "good" and somewhat polished even after tons of coke and fatting up like a pig in ´10. Its not like i want to make Maradona Messi free kick saviour , but i also don't want to dismiss the thought he may have played (a little) role Messi getting serious with free kicks.

In the article i read written maradona told messi to touch the ball longer when hitting the ball. I think it could be true, but then, no one knows unless messi clarify it himself. For me, it's fine for him getting help from maradona as he was, afterall, the god of football, at least before messi's arrival in this sport.
