For one thing it is pretty customary for clubs to start preparing for a renewal two years prior to the contrast expiration date (for Messi it is 2021).

Also I think in Messi's case we want to cement his playing career here and make him stay here as long as he possibly can.

I can't say I don't care about Messi's personal records (I care absolutely nothing about how many CL's he wins after he leaves us) but I care much, much more about the trophies and titles our club wins.

Say he leaves us for City. If he plays in the CL final for City against us, you bet everything I'd want us to win. If he is in the final against another team, I think I will root for him to win. But I truly don't care how many CL's he wins with another team. The only thing I care about him aside from anything related to us is I want him to win a WC but it is not going to happen ever.
