10 - Lionel Messi - V6

More than 1 out of every 3 goals he has scored this season is outside the box, with 10 total already. His best season in regards to this was 16/17 where he had something like 17 out of 54 goals from outside the box.

This year especially, it's due to his absurd FK rate. But this brings attention to the larger point that Messi has like 5 seasons where he scored more goals from outside the box than Ronaldo did in his best single season for RM in this regard. I imagine he only had like 1 or at most 2 such seasons at United as well. Ronaldo may have had more range for crazy screamers but Messi's unreal accuracy from the perimeter of the box is way more repeatable/effective as a weapon. He has the largest effective shooting range of any great goalscorer ever.

There have been other players with his accuracy/effectiveness from the perimeter but none that are noteworthy all round goal scorers at the same time.

We are so use to seeing him scored 40 goals a season that only one to compare is he, himself.

Boy, i feel pity for striker/playmaker generation after messi. It would be hard for them lol.

Is it just me or was he faster than usual yesterday? His strides seemed longer and yet the control was as good as ever. I always thought that in recent years he'd been sacrificing a bit of speed for better control, but yesterday was different. Anyone? :DD

Some say it was due to ATM being tired, that he looked faster. But I agree with you he looked faster, there have been times where I have been wondering if he doesnt go all out to pace him self - now with his "injury" it would make sense i guess. We are in for a treat against United. He will rip their defence apart like a mad dog.

Already tearing away from Ronaldo domestically, just needs to close that gap in Europe.

Cristiano was 31 when he started his run of winning three on the trot, Messi is 31 now and also needs about 16 more goals to catch him in the CL scoring charts.

Hopefully he can get a decent number more in the remaining matches to close it a bit, three trebles in the space of 10 years would also be pretty special.

No shame in being 2nd best to Ronaldo in CL as far as scoring goals is concerned. Man is an animal in this competition. Messi just has to concede this stat to his rival. Don't see Messi being as decisive as Ronaldo is at 34, scoring hattricks against teams like Atletico.

Messi hasn't scored a single goal in the quarterfinals in 11 games since 2013. Scoring rate in CL is one of his weaker points since Pep. The sooner people accept Ronaldo is the more efficient scorer in CL knockout stages the better.

They showed the acceleration of Messi on his goals, he reached 31.3 km/h wich is pretty damn good considering also it was basically at the end of the match so he's definitely in great shape. Too bad his shots weren't that good otherwise he would have scored at least another goal. I miss some of his bomb into the net like the first one he scored against Arsenal 9 years ago (yesterday was the birthday of that match...).

I remember that match like it was yesterday. Watched it in a college bar, totally ignored my date after the first Messi goal.
I think back then people already started calling Messi goat at 22 after that performance.

For me if I ever were to determine prime Messi at his absolute best it would probably be from that match untill he got injured vs Paris in 2013.
Luckily if that was 10/10 we can still consider him 9+ today. Still banging in 50 a year with great passing and freekicks.

No.

Again, why is there no middle ground here, for you guys it's either certain players to blame and if someone doesn't agree then you think it's Messi.

I am saying the whole team, as a TEAM is in shambles. Everyone is to blame, don't put Higuain as scapegoat.

I agree, and to make clear: i NEVER put Higuain or another player as scapegoat.
For me also the coach (e.g Maradona) and (big role) AFA are to blame
I always hoped that Simeone would become the coach, i am sure that he would be perfect to coach this argentina.

On the other hand, it is also necessary to admit, than with a little bit luck, ARG could have won 1 of these 4 lost finals.

For me 2014 argentina was quite good, they reach final, no matter how much luck they get (to reach it).
And yeah, they couldve defeat the best team in the tournament if they (higuain) have a better luck (not blaming him as its not really an open goal). Seems the lucky charm didnt work in the final.

Telling argentina a mess when they reach final is the same as saying garbage to majority of teams playing. Sabella is a tactical master, accept it. Almost beating a sensational team that run riot with the tournament home team (who happen to be traditional champion) is no light feat.
