The player least likely, To ever be hurt by an overcrowded side of a pitch, Is dembele, Because he’s as versatile as a player can ever get.
Number of good midfielders&attackers at Rennes: 1
Who is a key player: Dembele
Number of good midfielders&attackers at Borussia: a few
Who is a key player: Dembele
Number of good midfielders&attackers at Barca: 10-15
Who is a key player: Messi
Malcom came from a Bordeaux, where he was a key and the best player.
Arthur came from Santos where he was a key and the best player.
Dembele came from Rennes and Dortmund, where he was a key player.
Some people would say: but, Dembele was awesome at Rennes/Dortmund when he was a key player.
If we turn him into a key player here, maybe he would play equally as good.
Fair idea.
But what about others then?
Should Messi lose a key player place?
What about Coutinho? etc
Also, both Rennes and Borussia played more direct football with more space to counter.
Further, Dembele can't play in the middle for Barca since we have Messi in the middle and Suarez, the only true attacker on a world class level in our team (besides Messi, who is not a Cf anymore).
Dembele can't play on the left since Coutinho will play as a LM in 442, or even as a LW in 433.
So, the only way for Dembele to play is:
1. injuries
2. or a Rw in 433 or Rm in 442
Then, go back to my post, since the last season, what other "movements" in a team we had which could influence a Rm/Rw position:
442:
1. Malcom as a direct competitor. He wasn't here last season. Dembele's competitors were Alex Vidal, Gomes, Paulinho, Roberto
2. Arthur. As explained, if we'll play 442 with 4 true Cms, then we'll play: Coutinho, Busi, Rakitic, Vidal/Arthur. So, no place for Dembele in the starting lineup. And 5 Cms fighting for 4 spots.
3. Vidal, the same story: Cou, Busi, Raki, Arthur/Vidal. No Dembele. Arthur and Vidal weren't here last season.
4. Roberto as a Rm, if Semedo will play good as a Rb, like in a preseason. That means either as Roberto one of 6 Cms choices (Busi, Cou, Raki, Vidal, Arthur, Roberto) in a 442 flat with 4 true Cms, or Roberto as a Rm in 442.
5. Rafinha, as a Rm in 442, who wasn't here last season, and who played very good in a preseason.
For 433:
1. there is a chance that EV will play Cou-Luis-Messi, and Arthur/Vidal/Rakitic, insert 2 out of 3 plus Busi as midfielders, with Malcom and Dembele entering later.
Arthur, Vidal weren't here last season. Those two could play as starters in 433, which means moving Coutinho to a Lw (as Sport suggested) with Dembele and Malcom on the bench.
2. Roberto as a midfielder. The same story. if he plays in the middle, Cou will be moved to Lw, since we'll have: Busi, Raki, Vidal, Arthur, Roberto and Rafinha in the middle.
3. Rafinha as a midfielder in 433 or even Rw. He wasn't here last season.
4. Malcom as his direct competitor for a Rw spot in 433. Malcom wasn't here last season. And Malcom played preseason matches.
Like it or hate it, objectively, Dembele had way less competition in April/May of 2018 than today.
Remember, Dembele didn't play in CL match against Roma nor in CDR final, in 2 most important matches in April/May.
He did start to play league matches once when La Liga was won, when there was no pressure anymore.
And even if we assume that he was a starter then, since then we bought: Vidal, Arthur, Malcom, Rafinha (Roberto as a midfielder) who will all influence lineups in 442 and 433 and Dembele's minutes.
