isn't it true that with how Umtiti has been playing compared to how Masche has been playing that Masche will be on the bench more often than in the past?

Mascherano is in a period of bad form and now we have a capable CB who can start for us

I respect Mascherano for what he has done for us and still do but time goes on and we are preparing a player to become our starting CB so he's gonna get plenty of chances and this means masche in this case and even Pique will be on the bench more often

But he is a barca player and with the performances he s been showing he will get chances at the expense of either Pique or Mascherano depending on Lucho and how he rotates

Dude always had moments when he totally fucked up everything and then went on to have top tier performances against top teams. He's a leader and always gives his heart on the field. Just because some new Cb played great in his first 5 games or whatever , that doesn't give him the right to start benching the guy who won 5 throphies last year as a starter with Barca , not to mention the other trophies in the past.
So basically you mean Mascherano should never touch the bench unless injured or so?

Well we're giving him a contract extension so I very much doubt he's going to the bench. And I hope he continues as our starting CB for a few more seasons.
It's great the club is extending his contract, Masch has sacrificed A LOT for Barca.
He could have left during his prime years to play for any top team and become become recognized as one of the greatest DMs of all time. But he remained loyal to us and played out of position, for which he has still done an amazing job.

lets make a slow transition from masche to Umtiti, it takes some time to be a starting CB at Barca.

The "problem" is Masche has won titles for us, so he's allowed to be shit.
Come to think of it
It was the same issue when it was "Pedro Vs Neymar"
And guess what the same people are involved

How many full games has Umtiti played for us? How many of those had defining moments in our season? In how many of those games was Umtiti really pushed to the extreme and showed he's above Masch?
We know for a fact Masch can deliver when it matters and that this is a rough patch of low form, the recent bad games are the exception not the rule, so that's what gets him the benefit of the doubt, not how many titles he's won... You can bet your ass any coach in the world would chose Masch over Umtiti without even having a second thought...
That's not to say he should a starter by default as some are implying, and if he doesn't improve fast then I agree some adjustments should be made, but calling for his head right now and making up stupid nicknames for a player that has left his skin and heart for the club is nothing short of a disgrace...
