Read back through comments. Most rave about him as a defender and this time last year some were even calling him up there with the best in the world and second in performances only to Messi.

He has been good in vastly more big games than he has cost goals in.

You don't realise its not only about goals but the amount of chances the opponents create,there can be many chances and still we get lucky and not concede any goal.Based on your opinion if we don't concede any goal despite of Mascherano's mistakes to give away chances, he had a good performance...but thats not reality.

No i have never said mistakes dont matter if they dont lead to goals and he doesnt make that many mistakes anyway.

His reading of the game defensively is the best in the team, is the most comfortable defender in coming out with ball and he has exactly the type of attitude needed in the team.

He has been one of the top players in the team the past three seasons at CB and is rightly highly regarded at Barca.

You really think it matters how many players we have in defence from the moment they can't perform well?You make no sense cause we had this defence for like 2 years and nothing did go well..

Puyol in addition to getting injured more often is getting slower and can't keep up with the young talent out there. Bartra got a long way to go before we can depend on him in big games. I think this season could be his last at the club. Between this summer and next summer, we will probably/hopefully strengthen further at centre back and the likes of Bartra and Bangnack will hopefully develop more so I don't think Masch will be really needed. I love the guy but I think a move would be good for him. He needs to show again that he is one of the best defensive mids in the world and not just a decent make-shift centre back.

^It's possible it is his last season BUT I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed the whole course of Tata's reign either.
