Not exactly a hard choice this year except for trolls like ogbarca.
Messi was top scorer of his league, one of top assisters in his league too. Then on top of that captained his team to a major international trophy as top scorer, assister and player.
Vs
Top goal scorer of bundesliga
And
Not the top scorer of his league and nations league winner.
Jorginho getting shouts for it is like giving Busquets ballon d?or throughout the years. Sure a crucial component of the victories but not THE reason for the victories.
Busquets would have made sense in a way, if it wasn't for Messi being so obviously GOAT every year, so much more spectacular and obviously better than anyone else.
But Busquets was the best midfielder/defensive midfielder a lot of the years, it isn't a position that usually wins the price, but he was and is one of the very best players of the world.
Jorginho is ridiculous, he wouldn't be in the top 50 of anyones list if Italy and Chelsea lost even the finals marginally, nevermind went out in the QF or something due to another players mistake. I don't think the price should be about "who in the teams that happened to win stood out the most" or "who happened to be in a few teams that won some big trophies" but "who played the best football over the year"
Jorginho is not even the best in Chelsea all?s midfield !
Messi 1.11
Lewandowski 4.60
stunning
Well he is not even Italian but that is another storyNot the best in Italy's midfield either.
The guy happened to be there and suddenly he's a nominee. Laughable if he even makes the top 10.
There are lots of factors that influence the general football public, or shall I call them trolls, also we see clearly how the media shapes the perspective on any subject, fake news and such.
Messi was the most exciting player in the world back when he had his speed, the Athletic Bilbao goal in 2015 being in my mind the last example of his phenomenal explosive dribbling. Once he slowed down his game it became harder to win neutral ground, because all they care about is the goal tally and trophies won. After 2012 Ballon d'Or (which was Leo's 4th I think compared to 1 CR BdO) something changed and the journalists started to shift to the team performance criteria. The 2013 award for Cristiano was a weird moment, mostly fueled by the stupidity of then FIFA president Sepp Blatter's comments. You can't convince me two hattricks against Sweden in the WC playoffs is enough, Ribery was robbed that year.
Ballon d'or hasn't been a joke for a long time. 2 of the greatest players of all time have won it every year except one year. The levels of Messi and Ronaldo have been so far above others they've set a different standard that we've got bored of seeing. So when in 2018 Messi scores something like 50 goals and gets 25 assists in 50 games he finishes 5th. Unless that's the reason for saying it's a joke.
Otherwise pretty much deserving winner has won it each year.
Pendu cried in 2013 about Fifa Ballon dor so they had to extend and waited till he scored vs almighty Sweeden in a play off lol.
