The truth is somewhere in the middle tbh. 25 goals and 21 assists are great numbers but Messi also contributed very little off the ball, everything in the team went through him, and the majority of his goals came against the weaker teams that season.

So Messi’s stats and performances are sometimes taken a bit for granted but it’s also not really fair to make a direct comparison of goals and assists to other players that also defend and have a more defined role in the team.

I remember the Ronaldo goals against Sweden: He caught the gullible Swedes (including their naive manager) by his excellent playacting: he pretended to be hurt, was left alone by the defense, and was then running faster than ever to score.

Dunno. I think that if he had won it he would be hyping up the potential win already. Things along the like "It would be honor to win a prize as prestigious as balon d'or. It affirms and emphasizes the great work and performance carried out by the player throughout the year. I have yet to win one. In the past many great players have won it and it would be a great achievement for me to earn my place within that pantheon...blablabla"

I think you catch my drift.

Maybe he wasn't even notified that he didn't win. I think winners get notified first and then all the other ones.
