21 - Frenkie de Jong

Ankle problems are always a bitch to recover from. When he's fully fit there's not much doubt about him.

That being said it's crazy he just got 24% of League minutes so far (and 15% games as starter). Recovered just in time with Casado's nose dive in form + injury.

Ok. I have been wanting to post this here for a long time but for some reasons I have not had time to.

IN MY VIEW, Barca has only been getting 20% or 30% of what FDJ is capable of currently due to his recovering state and have only gotten 60/70% of his value even when he was at his best(2022/2023 season). And this maybe due largely to the clubs dynamics/technical reasons more than the problem with the player.

Unlike many here, I happen to have been following FdJ before Barca's interests were made open, or let me say, before it became popular(because I am sure many big clubs get scouting reports on many youth players in different clubs especially from the lower leagues regularly so in a way, i believe Barca would have heard of him before then too ).

I took notice of FDJ during the final of the 2017 Europa final between Ajax and Man U(the same match tha announced Matt De-Light to the whole world). When Ajax were 2 goals down and in the typical Mourinho style,Man U surrendered psossesion to Ajax to preserve their lead and run down time while becoming ultra defensive, Peter Bosz the Ajax Coach, made a substitution 10 minutes to the end of the game that I initially felt was strange, bringing a midfileder for a midfielder rather than an attacker when chasing the game. Man u had surrendered the entire pitch to Ajax so they could hang on to their lead at this time amd most coaches will pump in more attackers. FdJ came in and slotted right in between the two CDs, creating a kind of 3 man defence but acted as the libero. He was responsible for initiating all the action thereon and with 7/8 passes and interplay, he moved from his own box to the opponent's box gliding with ease within minutes. I took notice immediately because i thought I had seen something similar before to that that I considered great. It was Matthias Sammer at the Euro 96 under Vogts and the great Borrusia Dortmund team under Othman Hietzfield.

Even after then, I watched a lot of his matches under Bosz and later ETH and noticed he was deployed same way. This was before they became famous for that 2018/2019 UCL run. He was responsible for initiating the attack from Onana and with short passes and a lot of feints and turns he would move the balll to the opponents box with minutes. Frenkie excel in the libero role that players like Franz Beckenbauer, Matthias Sammer, Lothar Mattheus, Danielle Passarella, Gaetano Scirea, etc, all carved their name on. So when Barca bought him and many thought he was the heir apparent to Busquets , I knew it would not work. Frenkie is not a pivot, he will always abandon that position in favour of running the ball to the opponents box. He played like that at Ajax where many Ajax fans critised his risky feints and turns within his own penalty box while trying to outwit his opponents and some of those led to Ajax conceding goals.

When Xavi was angry with him for abandoning the defensive position for the few times he played DM for Barca then and many others criticised him for ball hogging I felt maybe they never watched him at Ajax long enough. FdJ is a libero type of a midfielder and never a defensive, attacking, box to box nor a creative midfielder in their natural meaning. Attempt to make him a DM will usually lead to underutilisation.

Barca does not play the libero system in a 3-4-3( a la Borrussia Dortmund of 1995-1998 under Hitzfeld) where one player initiates all attack via short passes and act as ball carrier to attract opposing players to himself in order to create space for his team mates and, often arrive at the edge of the opponents box while attacking but quick enough to slot back between the two CDs while defending or starting attack(Ajax under Van gaal in 1995-97 also played like that with Rijkaard and De Boer sharing the libero duties). He has tried adapt his game to what Barca wants in a 4-3-3 but I can tell you it is still a big struggle to match the level he is capable of and the recent injuries have also not helped.

I read a lot here about comparing him to Cassado. It is utter nonsense. They are players of different profiles who are adopted as pivots to fit into Flick's philosophy. Cassado is naturally an CM/AM coopted as a DM to fill in a void created by Bernal's injury and he has perfomed well, while Frenkie is a libero but shoehoned as a DM to fit into Flick's double pivot system. Frenkie will be 100% in any team that adopts the 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system where he occupies one of those 3 at the back with freedom to build, carry balls, initiate attacks . For now, we can enjoy the 25-30% he gives pending when his ankle is fully healed ti reach his 70% or so maximum. To get a 100^ from FdJ, you have tobgive him more freedom as a sweeper.

As I have stated before, Barca is blessed with good midfielders now and I am glad we have them available, injuries permitting. I have been a strong FdJ supporter here but I think he will share that double pivot role(if he extends)with Cassado/ Bernal/ Pedri till the team finds a perfect balance. It is still WIP but FdJ can give a lot more, thats why he expressed his frustration in a recent interview that he felt he had underachieved at Barca

No Casado, No FDJ.

Ya, things are not looking good.
People should stop hoping for a treble. Look at the bad juju it is creating.

Not Good, believe me, not good!!!!

Like I said nothing such as jinx in life. Btw, he is only rested for Girona and it isn't really an injury just an overload.
Nothing wrong with having faith.
