Vermaelen on his number 23: “Pure coincidence. I have no obsession with numbers and don’t have favourites.”

Vermaelen on his first year: "It was difficult for a lot of reasons but mainly because I was suffering from injury."

Vermaelen: "You come to a club & want to prove your worth, but you can't because of injury. I had to adapt: new life, new coach, new city."

Vermaelen: "The preseason was very important. Its fundamental to get through it without any problems, & that's why my start has been better"

Vermaelen: "We won the treble last season and we know it won't be easy to do again, but we'll have to try. We have the same team."

Vermaelen: "I want to play as many games as possible. It's a big club & not easy to get a game. I want to improve & play as much as I can."

Vermaelen: "I’ve played in the Champions League against Messi and he’s very hard to mark."

Vermaelen: “What can I say in Catalan? 'Visca el Barça'. “Bon dia” is Catalan, isn’t it?”

Vermaelen: “Who is the best player I have ever played with? That's easy. Messi.”

Vermaelen: “When I retire, I want to play golf. There aren’t many players here that are golfers. I love it.”

Vermaelen: “I hang out with players that speak English. Rakitic or Ter Stegen, who lives very near to me in Castelldefels.”

Vermaelen: “Pre-game rituals? I always put my right foot on the pitch first. A lot of players do that.”

Vermaelen: “People who know me say I’m quiet and laid back. That I don’t like to make a fuss. I try to stay calm and not get angry.”
