The primary problem of Stegen is not that he makes blunders from time to time. It's that he does that without any of the clutch performances some keepers like Alisson, Courtois, Oblak manage to pull off. So you have a keeeper that almost never saves his team, and is likely to burry it.

There is no top coach that would have Oblak over MATS in past 10 years..bar maybe likes of Simeone.

Plenty 'clutch' performances to help Barca win league and give Xavi his only trophy of relevance.

It's all down to mentality. Those keepers are lions, Stegen is like a little kitten all alone in the rain on the side of the road.

If ter Stegen need perfect conditions with a wall of a defence to perform at an acceptable level in Europe then what is he good for?
Obviously it's not always his fault if the defence crumbles, but like you mentioned those GKs have had games where they have made a lot of big time saves to keep their team in the game or tie when their team and defence have fallen apart.

Every Barca player had faded in big CL games for years..

Also. A wall of a defence can't happen with a bum keeper. A big part of the pressure of a low block will fall down on the keeper. That's why almost all defensive heroics are almost always tied to big GK clutch games. Stegen needs a potent attacking side that will keep pressure away from him. A defensive team invites pressure. He can't survive at any top club imo. Just too many flaws. Only Barca and maybe City. I mean, not much between Ederson and Stegen.

I mean what are we talking about, this guy conceded 4 goals vs Liverpool from the most random of shots. If he played for Atletico in 2020, he would have conceded between 6 and 8 goals, not 2.

The 2nd goal was such a poor shot from Wijnaldum. It took some great effort to let that go in.

You tend to expect more from the ones you know can take it. Bums don't do carrying work, they are usually the ones being carried.
