Just got done rewatching the game against Juventus. In my opinion, we've got ourselves a true gem on our hands. Whenever he gets the ball you can tell he has a first choice of what he's going to do with it before a teammate even decides to pass to him. Several times he gets passed the ball in tight situations and one touches it perfectly to another teammate in open space. His choices on when to back pass are usually reserved for when there aren't any options for passing forward or when nobody is making any runs, which is in stark contrast to players like Arda, Gomes, or even early days Roberto, who seem to be almost afraid to make forward or diagonal passes. He knows the correct times to dribble and when to make his pass and his ability to spot an open player making the run was perfect throughout the entire half. Also, watching the half over makes comments like the following absolutely hilarious.
It is probably just me, but to me he lost the ball quite a few times under pressure today. Could do more to learn how to shield the ball better. Also his ball distribution could improve I felt.
Here is every time Alena lost the ball:
-51:27, Suarez played an outside of the boot pass to him at close range while he was already tightly marked. Put Messi in that same situation and we still lose possession there 9 times out of 10.
-69:55, Attempted to control a headed ball that went through his legs, in which he immediately pressed the Juve player to force a poor pass.
-84:04, Tried to pass to Alba who was wide open but the ball was blocked by Suarez, who was probably expecting the pass to be to him, as he could expect from the usual Gomes or Arda quality midfielders we fielded under Lucho.
-89:26, Tried to control a ball from the air and got stripped before he could take full control. Not sure if there's more he could have done about that one or not.
And if you want to talk about shielding the ball, he did exactly that at 64:49 and drew a foul from doing it. And as far as his distribution goes, Suarez misplay aside, I genuinely cannot recall a single misplaced pass. Not even one. His distribution was on another level even in comparison to his teammates that were also having great games.
Having just finished rewatching the game and coming back to see this comment, I have to wonder what the hell you're talking about. No, actually, I have to wonder what fucking game you were even watching, because it damn sure wasn't Juve vs Barca. But keep on with the nonsensical narratives of him being sloppy, him losing the ball "Quite a few times", needing to shield the ball, needing to improve his distribution, etc. It's all, quite frankly, total bullshit, but you'll be the ones crying when he makes the step up.
In Alena we have a quality midfielder who not only knows how to dribble, but knows when it is necessary. A midfielder who knows when short passes and back passes are necessary, but has no fear or making the through pass or long ball to an open man making the run. A midfielder who has no problem taking a chance to shoot if he feels like taking the shot instead of taking a high risk pass. A midfielder who demands the ball just by being there, and knows what to do with it before he gets it. A midfielder who is, quite honestly, better than all of our backups bar possibly Roberto. Yes, I know it was a friendly, but him being 19 and putting on performances that show a class we haven't seen in our midfield in such a long time is definitely something to take note of. If Valverde really does give chances to youngsters who deserve them Alena should be a first team player well before he turns 20 this January. There's very little argument to be made about it. He showed more as a CM in this one game than Gomes did the entirety of last season, and idgaf what the usual fanboys have to say about it. No more buying 30-40m midfielders and begging the fans to give them 1-2-3-4-5 years to adapt, let's use the talent we have right in front of us. I know a common joke among all Barca communities is we don't need a player of X position because X player we already have is "our new signing", but in this case it could very well ring true, especially if we don't actually sign a midfielder. For the first time in a very long time, I think our future in midfield looks bright.
Visca Barca.
Visca Alena.
