7 - Philippe Coutinho - V1

Liverpool have screwed us and for what? So they can finish 6th and leave Coutinho trophyless again. Still pisses me off.

It's not like they'll ever win anything. They're a selling club yet they decide to pick on Barca and refuse to sell, probably out of spite because Southampton wouldn't sell them Van Dijk after their arrogance fucked that deal up.

They had a poor start indeed, but it's not like we've won anything yet. The tough games are coming and with the political situation in Catalunya, LFP will try to screw Barcelona wherever they can. However, with the possibility of Klopp leaving Liverpool, things might change for Coutinho as well.

They'll finish in the same position with or without him (6th) and win nothing with or without him. If they'd have bought defenders they may have done better.

So having Coutinho makes no difference to them. It would have done to us yet we have to miss out. So the whole thing has done nobody any good, least of all the player himself who has to waste another year there.

It makes a whole lot of difference if you want to bridge the league quality gap as a club... You think Klopp went there to continue their legacy of selling their top talent and continue being stuck in mid-table?

Klopp is an overrated dick. Dortmund had that amazing team with pre-injury Gündogan, Lewandowksi, Hummels, pre-fatness Götze, Kagawa and made it to a CL final. Since then it's only gone downhill for him. He won't transform Liverpool. They'll remain the same upper midtable club which they've been the last 2 decades.

... and the only way to change that is to keep what you already have, rather than sell it on? They're sick of being Everton or Southampton level. Liverpool with prime Gerrard were the team where players like Alonso, Torres, Mascherano etc wanted to play. They need dudes like Coutinho to build around for that. Whether it screws with Coutinho's short term plans or not...

No it isnt.

What Liverpool have to do is weigh up whether their team would be better with 120m or Coutinho.

When there is such an unbalanced team with glaring weaknesses it easily possible they would have been better selling him and strengthening team overall.

Coutinho has never been and never will be a 100m+ player, so if they dont want to sell him for a reasonable price then just forget about it and focus on la masia instead.

But they won't get better when Klopp is stubborn about certain signings and blind about his own players. He rejected the possibility to look for other CBs in order to focus fully on Van Dijk. That didn't happen.

Meanwhile Juventus picked up Howedes on a loan with option to buy for 15m. A German CB who could be perfect for Liverpool, certainly better than Lovren and Klavan. Actually scratch that as he's been injured lol. Although will be back soon.

But there are plenty of other options in the market that Liverpool didn't look for.

Then they don't even have a proper CDM and not even looking for one there. On top of all that, Klopp's style of play exposes them defensively.

Their team is incredibly top heavy and signed another attacking midfielder in Naby Keita joining next summer. You cannot play with that front three, two attacking midfielders and one pseudo-defensive midfielder and that backline, and expect to fight for top places or trophies.

It isnt or wasn't about the money with coutinho, the money is there to strengthen the team without selling coutinho

Hardly stubbornness. More like awareness that self-destruction and complete revamping of the squad will not ensure a consistent CL spot. We are all aware that their team is loaded with average players and a garbage captain to lead them. You can hardly generate a core like that overnight. Can and Gini are capable of making that step up, hence no moves needed here. Getting Keita is an attempt at getting a CDM, but hardly a discplined one. Then again Liverpool was never about discipline in any form or fashion. Milner seems like the only guy sort of capable of that and even he is average.
Now, this is still a Champions League qualifying team. Lovren, Klavan and Matip are.. OK, when the team is having a good run. But where they got results last season is not likely to repeat, because both Manchester teams improved over summer. Liverpool haven't. That is why pocketing money for Coutinho is absolutely not the way to go about this. 1) because Liverpool can't just throw whatever they make on Coutinho at any player they want and expect them to sign on the dotted line, 2) there is no guarantee they would be able to replace him with anybody from current or new generation. Would leave them with far more uncertainties in the time where they want to keep improving.

In short, why, as a CL aspiring team, would you let Coutinho leave when you're surrounded by garbage and a few glimmers of talent? I kind of suspect Klopp is being stubborn on purpose given the history of Liverpool spending their precious money on atrocious players. Can't blame him. And he can hardly conjure up 2 good-to-great CBs willing to fight for a CL spot anywhere around France or Germany. Not with average contracts they tend to give out when compared with more well-off teams like Arsenal.

I get why Liverpool wants to hold on to Coutinho - for the exact same reasons as Southampton holds on to Van Dijk. And exactly like with Van Dijk you can make the argument, that a club should know its place in the food chain, because Southampton isn't a club that all of a sudden can attract his level of players and its just symbolic action to do so for 1 more season. Of course they could force Coutinho to run down his contract, but that would force players to sign shorter contracts or reject Liverpool far more in the future.

The CB-question is indefensible, tbh. A lot of CBs were available and traded during the summer, who are way better than Liverpools defence, which by far is their greatest concern.
With two of Höwedes/Laporte(has a release clause)/de Vrij/Rüdiger/Manolas/Süle or even Musacchio/Lindelöf their team would be able to take the 'next step' with far more certainty than by keeping Coutinho. It is just a shame if symbolic action means more than real issues for Liverpool, as they will never be more than a sub-top-club with that defence.

I like Coutinho but Barcelona should just drop this idea of getting him. He is going to cost a crazy amount of money come seasons end which I feel is the only time Liverpool will reluctantly consider any offer.
