People laughed last year when folks mentioned him leading Europe in pre-assists, because they thought that it isn't a serious state. But it shows exactly the role that Pedri, and other midfielders, aare asked to do, his job is to give the ball to the winger or fullback, and let them cook. Not to create a chance by himself.
Come on, Xavi was saying over and over again last season how we miss players to give a final ball in the team. Any player is encouraged to go for a pass if he sees the option and is confident in his ability to make it.
Pedri is not that confident in his ability to make a risky pass and pull it off frequently. It's simply that. He's a kid. He hasn't developed that confidence and that ability to pass like a top playmaker.
What you say is just not true. Xavi finished a season with 31 assists in 2008/09. Now all of a sudden as a manager he is instructing the midfielders to play it safe, despite him pulling off final balls en fanfare as a player. It's just not possible.
As usual, Occam's razor applies here. The explanation that requires the fewest assumptions is usually correct. Midfielders don't pass well enough in the final 3rd, and strikers don't score enough goals from the passes that do get made.
There are many moments where Pedri could pick a solution to advance a play and he doesn't do it. It's a hesitance down to him, not the manager.
No manager in the world is gonna tell you to pass the ball wide if you have a clean opening to take a shot from 16m. Pedri does this constantly. You're gonna tell me the manager also instructs him not to shoot from a good position?
He lacks the cutting edge to get things done on the offensive end. That's something he will either develop in, or not.
