You're right. He isn't on Messi's level.
Here's the thing with Lewandowski:
He has been proper world class since his Dortmund days.
But since 3 years back, he has entered another whole new level.
He's getting peak Messi/Ronaldo numbers in the league and UCL(With the exception of Messi's 91 goal season where his league numbers are alien). In the UCL he's getting proper peak Messi Ronaldo numbers.
No one thought that someone would get those numbers so it shocked many people hence some people will overrate him.
But since he's the best now, you'll see tons of people underrating/dissing him because they are uncomfortable with the kind of statistics he's consistently achieving.
The truth is somewhere in the middle.
Getting overrated and hated are both part and parcel of being at the very top.
Few years back when Lewandowski was only world class, you'd see everyone raving over him and his all round game. Now you'll see the same people trying to bring him down.
Frankly, other than the obvious 2 players, I find it very easy to make arguments for Lewy over other players.
He's hilariously underrated on this forum(love it).

I started following him early in 2020 when CR was playing like he was on a mission to win back the ballon d'or and Lewa looked the best contender to stop him. I had about 18 months then as a quasi Lewa supporter cheering him on to stop CR winning any golden boots or ballon d'ors. Then in late 2021, I could see Messi was totally done so now Lewa is my favorite player left.
