I was only able to watch the first half. He did what he was supposed to do. He does seem a little slow, but maaybe he is just not right there like almost everyone? We will see. Deff not the flop of match like Pique though

It was the right decision to use him with roberto on the right, Instead of semedo plus roberto, Valaverde correctly anticipated that alaves will be playing with 10 men behind the ball and somewhat a deep block, And we'll have an extremely hard time creating real scoring chances, Specially without suarez present or WC winger like neymar or dembele, And it was in fact very tough creating dangerous attempts as we saw in these 90 minutes.
Vidal+roberto combo on the right flank is a great way to up our offensive capability and creativity on the right, Since alaves weren't very interested in attacking very much, the defensive problems these two might cause weren't as important overall in this particular match, (There was only once instance where this created a problem)
Semedo isn't as good as SR or vidal going forward, Which is what we needed against alaves, But i'm sure semedo will still be our main RB in most other matches, Where the opponent is actually interested in coming forward.

Good post but I disagree with that last point. Semedo is much better going forward than both Vidal and Roberto and he's better by some distance, imo. Even in his unadapted state he has provided more to our attack than either Roberto or Vidal could hope to, and defensively he's as bad as the rest of them.
Yes, the point of the post is that Nelsinho isnt so good going forward, which is clearly nonsense.

Well, he was great going forward for benfica, But he still has only 120 minutes official playing time for us, I don't think he reached that comfortable state yet where he can show his offensive capability fully with us, Maybe in 6 months time, He'll be fully integrated, And can show us his true colors, But as of now, Despite how much crappy vidal is at defense, He's still quite the decent winger.
Let's remember just how difficult it is to play in these crappy la liga stadium, With their smaller pitch and tall, Uneven grass, Even our best players struggle in it, And as we saw last season, Most of our points were lost in this kind of places, Vidal+Seri was overall a "safer" bet.

What i meant is he's not as good AS them going forward, Not that he's not good going forward as a RB period, And it's isn't a surprise, vidal was is natural winger for most of his career, Roberto is an attacking midfielder for most of his career.
And again, No matter what attacking capability semedo possess, It's not possible that he can fully and comfortably express them within 120 minutes of official playtime with us, He needs to get comfortable in how team operates and have better chemistry with his colleagues, Something that hasn't happened yet, It's an unrealistic expectations to think he already does, He did good in the last match, But that was in camp nou, Where we dominated, And he played in a smooth large pitch.
If this match was against real sociedad, Or athletic or any team that's interested in going after the ball, I'm sure valverde would've played semedo, It would've been suicide to field vidal+roberto against those teams, But because we were already toothless going forward without suarez or neymar replacement, And the fact alaves decided to keep 10 men behind the ball, valverde opted to play for these two, And in my opinion it was the right decision.

How much time Semedo has played matters very little, if even at all. In the time he's been out there he's shown himself to be better than Roberto and Vidal in attack by far. I mean, with that logic you could say Suarez wasn't as good as Munir when he first got unbanned because he hadn't scored enough goals yet.

That bolded part is just pure hyperbolic and exaggerated statement, Based on nothing logical, Where in the hell did that come from, But never-mind.
I'm just repeating myself now, My comments about semedo is concerned with THIS SPECIFIC MATCH, Not a general statement about him.
In THIS match valverde wanted the RB to be in very advanced positions for long periods of the match, Because of alaves's organized block and their reluctance to go forward and open spaces, My point is that semedo hasn't encountered anything like this while in benfica as a RB, Being asked to stand very forward almost along the same lines with the forwarders for long periods ,Sergi or even if it was vidal, Are much comfortable with that, As roberto already played a RB for us for an entire season, And vidal is a natural winger, A natural RB like semedo will never be suddenly feel at home with the eccentric way our full backs operate and stay up the pitch for prolong periods of time, Something that is with time and experience he'll get the hang of it, That's my whole point, I don't know why this turned into a rocket-science debate.
And i even said, That if this were against another la liga team that was willing to attack more, Or if we had our suarez and neymar replacement present, Then valverde would've put semedo in the line-up, As sergi+vidal is unbalanced and just suicidal, But our hands were a bit forced in this match.
And that suarez-munir comparison, Is just a straw man, That i won't bother answering.
