Tin hat on here but..... I still think he COULD be a good player in a more midfield orientated set up and with more confidence.

Would have more faith that he could be a good player in that system than Denis, Rafinha or Rakitic would be.

So far just seen a player void of any confidence is a system totally unsuited to him.

He'd do much better for a team like Juve. I don't know if he could actually be good for Barça. He's slower than Cesc, and not as good at passing as cesc was.

Pep didnt want Modric and the midfield was strong at that point. Not getting Kroos and taking in Rakitic was a decision that will hurt Barca for years even accounting for Rakitic being quite good in second half of treble season Kroos is just in a different class.

Yeah i know man.. he was talking about how Gomes is "pretty player" I was pointing out Modric because he's not exactly the best looking footballer.

But yeah Modric would have been a dream.

The Cesc who was at Barca would be the best midfielder at the club just now and one the front three would trust with the ball as well. Not that he was brilliant.

There is just something to Gomes I havent given up on him as a complete flop until see him playing with more confidence in a better suited style.

Maybe wishful thinking.

Same. It's clear that he is not playing well, and he is rightfully getting the heat for it, as should our other midfielders because they aren't doing any better. I'm expecting a managerial change that would trigger a switch from this rigid positional football back to a more fluid shape, where our player on the ball has passing options that reveal themselves easier.

If anything, the plus side I've seen from Gomes is that his service is usually precise if he has a clear passing option. The problem is our midfielders do not have those clear passing options because of how weak our off the ball game is, so their passes are reduced to either safety back or side passes or high risk passes that can fail very easily. At this moment, we are unable to find any good low-risk forward passes because our off the ball game which is inexistent. And this is down to the whole team and especially down to the manager.

That being said, he needs to improve some important aspects, like his body position when he receives a pass from the centrebacks. He has to position himself in order to have a clear picture of what is happening around him. Because he was playing back passes several times with no one around him. And that only happened because his body was moving in clear contrast to the direction of play.

But the way we play right now, is all wrong. He is not defensively good enough to play positional zonal defence and block attacking threats in a large area on his own, because he does not have any clear defending skill. We might as well play Mascherano - Busquets - Rakitic in midfield the way things are looking.

That's how we've been playing for a while. The other day you said we were not playing badly. Psg changed your mind?

Yes. Because I expected the performance to improve given the stakes of the game. Like it did improve with Madrid in the clasico. Nobody expected us to lose 4-0.

It was the same vs atletico. It was somewhat clear a better team would punish us. Just a matter of time.

Against Atletico there was the first leg result that maybe made us play more defensive, gave us something to defend. Against PSG there is no excuse.

There was no excuse to play like shit vs atletico either. If Griez and Gameiro were on target, we'd be out. This was coming, not everyone was surprised by the psg match.

Of course. There was no excuse to lose to Celta 4-1 in the first season either, but we turned it around and got better. Sadly this time it doesn't seem that it will get better. There were many poor moments in all of Lucho's seasons so far. But this time it seems that we won't be able to fix them.

The "team" never turned anything around, imo. Even in the treble season, our tactics were often poor, but MSN literally carried us. When you have each of Messi, Neymar, and Suarez pulling magic out of the hat every other game you're bound to have success. I know this sounds a lot like the typical "Pep inherited a great team!" type of argument but in this case I really think it applies to Lucho, as the man clearly isn't a good manager, not for us and not for his teams in the past save for possible Celta, who never had high expectations in the first place.

When you say "This time we won't be able to fix [the issues]" it makes me wonder what we did in the past that fixed any issues and all I can think of is MSN hitting top form in Lucho's first season, followed by an alarming and steady decline that has only gotten worse until we are where we are now.

God Serena, the manager has an important role in the team in every scenario. Just 8 months ago people were praising Lucho all the time here.

God Serena is right. What important role did he have? Messi was the one who told Suarez to go to CF and moved to rw. The only thing lucho did was to stop the wide midfielders BS he tried to implement in 2014, but somehow I don't think it was his decision alone. There was that big crisis, early elections called, and he was still a new coach who had won nothing. After the treble, he got arrogant and started implementing his vision. And here we are now.

Actually, the wide midfielder thing he was doing at the start of 14/15 is kind of what he's doing with the midfield now. X_X
