André Gomes

He's had well over 30 bad games for us now.. I've never seen a Barca player given so many chances and still not performed. It's crazy! The fee for him is definitely the deciding factor in this.

We should have sold him for that 35m. when we had the chance. Would've been the best for us and for him as well. He doesn't have the skill, the courage, or the knowledge (game IQ) to play in midfield for us. The best he can be is a sub in a more offensive position. We have plenty of players for that.

Sell him to a team where he has more space.

I don't fault Valerde for starting Gomes once, before the real season begins. Valverde has to see his players in action.

If Gomes continues to feature regularly in the starting lineup, then it will be time to criticize Valverde.

I haven't watched yesterday's match. But from what I have seen last season, I can clearly see that Gomez has a very high potential. My question is if the system cannot make the best out of two of the greatest midfielders in history (Iniesta and Busquets), then how can you expect a young player who doesn't have experience of Total Football will shine in this system? But he should be criticized for his lack of will to take risk with his passes. But it is the coach who should encourage him to risk with more forward passes without worrying about the result. It's how you should build a team. Your main motive at the start of the season is to mould the players in to an efficient system. Fortunately for Barca, we already have the greatest system ever in football history and we still have most of the core players who excelled in the system. But unfortunately neither Lucho nor Valverde are interested in it. Our system is Midfield domination, but with these two coaches Midfield is only there to play sideway passes and back passes. And the signings of Rakitic and forwards who can't even pass the ball properly (Suarez, Deulofeu and to some extent Neymar) has only worsened the midfield based play.

Ours is not total football anymore. It's a simple build-up tactic - get the ball to Alba or Busquets, who should look to pass to Iniesta and if Iniesta is missing, then they will seek Messi. The rest of our tactic is just time wasting if something rare occurs, like Suarez scoring a header goal.

Andre Gomes is a joke. Paulinho was brought to take away some of the criticism on the Portuguese.

It's the system that is Joke. A system where the greatest midfielders of all time look like mediocre footballers. I am very much sure even if we sign Weigl, he will struggle the same way like Gomez. And the same can be said for Alena and Samper too. This system only suits to box to box midfielders. And that's why Roberto looks like best of the lot.

Serious question; are you Gomes' mother?

Got to be honest - I've seen absolutely no evidence of any 'potential.' Admittedly the system, or rather lack of system, probably doesn't help, but I've watched him maybe twenty times now, and apart from five reasonably adequate minutes when he improvised as a right back (not saying we should play him there; just to clarify. Dear god no), he's looked slow, sluggish, plays it far too safe far too often - and even then still manages to consistently cede possesion. A very, very average mid, who doesn't even compensate for his technical deficiencies with hard work. Genuinely, I'd take whatever we can get, admit defeat, and give his game time to Roberto or Alena instead. Oh, and him and Rakitic in the same mid? How many times do you need to make the same mistake?!

He's rubbish for Portugal as well so It's not the system's fault.

For some reason the national manager also insists on playing him at all costs.

Okay, in case if you're willing to listen, I shall reason. Some people including Allegri see him as a huge talent because of his attributes such as very good first touch, clean shooting, elegant movement with the ball, accurate short passes. These are the attributes that is very essential for Total Football. For example, you cannot see any of these attributes, minus clean shooting, from Suarez. That's why signing Suarez was a step back considering the fact that our team relies on passing game. But at the same time I will not say that Gomes will shine in Total Football system right now. Because he lacks many other important aspects for Total football such as positional awareness, off the ball movement, creative passes. But first of all, he doesn't even have a chance to play in a midfield oriented game to show his abilities which are very much bound for Total Football. It's not a coincidence that our midfield looks mediocre with the current system even after having Busquets and Iniesta (who is just a year older than Modric). But overall, Gomes and Alena are the only two midfielders in our squad that can play with Busquets and Iniesta in a passing oriented game. Also, there is a chance Gomes might develop the attributes he lack for passing games. The thing is you can't develop an attribute specific to Total Football if you don't play Total Football. And if you play Total Football now, Gomes and Alena are the only two youngsters that can be considered as options. (Might be Samper too).
