Cmon Sociedad were pressing like lunatics in the first half, they play like utter garbage against other teams but go apeshit against us, we always look like useless wanks against them, they gassed in the 1st half and the pressing was gone in the 2nd half. Lets not scapegoat Gomes for that 1st half, at least he is somewhat getting better

Got a little better of late but he's been given enough chances and hasn't taken them. Sell in summer imo.

Rakitic was actually not worse and had a much harder job to do. Gomes is just so superlatively horrid off the ball that most of the bad stuff he does goes unnoticed.
There was a minute long sequence where Rakitic had to migrate all the way to LM/LAM to initiate and do buildup because Gomes was nowhere to be seen, completely vacated his role. Verm and Alba were consistently bypassing Gomes in midfield because he would hide behind his marker and not be available. When he checks in for a pass, he runs to be DIRECTLY adjacent to the guy passing it.... Inviting more pressure and not going into space. 'Don't run straight towards the ball' is a lesson given to frigging U-7 players and this guy violates it time after time as a professional footballer.
Defensively he only does work if the guy he's marking has the ball, to which he'll press from behind. But in terms of covering his zone to discourage passes and taking up the right spaces...... nowhere to be seen. His help defense is outstandingly bad and Sociedad cut through us on his side time after time with no resistance.
Almost all of his instincts are wrong, it's actually impressive.

Good first 10 minutes in which he made one good dribble and made diagonal cross to Paulinho, which turned into a goalscoring chance. After that part this followed:
- 80% of Sociedad attacks, including both their goals, happened/got assisted from Jordi Alba and Andre Gomes zone of marking. I don't blame him, Eusebio's instructions were specifically pointed in this area. It's not rocket science to notice our weakest link.
- Gomes constantly finger pointing at Alba, telling him to track back the Sociedad players on the wing, because he is busy covering someone else.
- In some episodes Alba found himself marking two players at the same time. This was followed by some shouting and gestures by Alba to Gomes.
- A dozen of back passes.
- Good off the ball movement. The problem is Alba, Busi and Messi ignore him for a pass, even when Andre Gomes is wide open position. Luis Suarez came to his help.
Overall another mediocre game by Andre Gomes. Not bad, but not good. The only great thing about him playing 75+ minutes is that grandpa Iniesta was kept fresh for March-April period, if we get there of course.
