In regards to Xavi, I think he felt he still had something left in the tank and decided to go his own separate ways and be a starter in a less pressurized environment. He would have still been a really good bench/rotation option here but at his age he didn't have the legs and energy he once had to be a starter anymore.

Xavi had a contract that would have lasted till the past summer (2017) IIRC. He would stayed here to end his career if he wanted to
