the biggest thing with Fontas is that he's very composed. he doesn't get rattled, is confident in using the ball, and makes good decisions in terms of tackling and such.

his weakness are his reactions. and I don't just mean his physical reactions, although he doesn't appear to be as quick as Piqué let alone Puyol, Badger or Bilal, but mentally he seems that half-second slower to deal with any problem that arises in defence. he's basically a left-footed version of Chygrynskiy.

this is a contrast to Bartra, who is on anything like white on rice. AND looks composed in regular play. Bartra's problem is he's too psyched, and makes mistakes.

both COULD make it. I think Bartra has a better chance, though, because it's easier to coach mistakes out of players than it is to coach a player to mentally react faster to some shit goin' down. Sergi Gomez seems better placed than both, because from what I've seen and what jamrock has told me, the kid has a very balanced game with no real weaknesses.

Yeah I'll put my vote up for Sergi as well, he doesn't seem to get any credit, but from what I've seen he seems more solid than Fontas or Bartra

i saw him in the match against czech republic vs spain u-19 euro finals...he was clearly at fault for both the goals...and i dont think fontas is as quick as pique or even abidal.

@ 'even Abidal' Abi is our fastest defender. May be Adriano would give him a tough fight now though

I think Pique is faster than Abi, he just doesnt sprint very often. I remember in 2010 how he was just as fast as cr7 and many people regard him as extremely fast. Eric is pretty darn fast tho.

yeah abidal in recent times is pretty damn fast but i agree with mitkoa7x, pique must be faster than abidal...and overall what i meant to say was that i feel fontas is pretty slow to play as CB in our defence...he always seems to me a yard late.

Abidal is really, really fast. He is our fastest defender by far....when Puyol was in his 20s he was faster than Pique too.

As for Fontas, he is really, really slow. I don't think he'll make it for that simple fact, it's the same reason why Chygrynsky didn't make it. It doesn't matter how much experience or older he gets- he will always be too slow imo.

Sergio's positional sense as a CB really isn't that good and he's too slow...I feel much safer with Masch there.

I hope you're wrong. Fontas desperately need minutes to develop and reach his potential. Also Sergio needs to say far away from CB-position. He failed to perform there last season and Pep had to try other options (Badger, who was pretty good). But we all know how much Pep likes to rotate.

I think when the proper season starts and the full squad is available, Fontas will certainly be ahead of Busquets for a CB spot.

Maybe not Mascherano, depends on other things.
