I see your point, but Griezmann is a lot more important to Atleti than Arda was.

I'm not really so sure if you're correct there. Arda was more or less their only (world class) playmaker and played a big part of every title Atleti collected during his spell for them. The Turk was their top 3 player. And let's not forget that the gap between Atlético de Madrid and Barca/Madrid was bigger in the past compared to how it is nowadays...

He's also one of the top emerging talents;

A 25-year-old player isn't exactly a "talant" + Griezmann already proved that years ago at Sociedad.

I can't imagine Atleti would let him join a direct competitor.

If Simeone leaves after next season a good chance Griezmann is gone too, probably to the PL for a record fee.

Yeah, Griezmann himself said he wanted to be sure that Simeone's gonna stay at Atleti before signing the new contract.

Also, the Argentine was the reason why Griezmann joined them in the first place.

Odd choice, yes he scored important goals and his overall contribution is great but it seems to me it should have gone to Suarez or Messi.
Suarez winning best forward and Messi best player overall for 15-16 would have made more sense for example.

Why? He's in terrible form. Hasn't scored in 8 games, and has been poor all around. I wouldn't spend money on him, even less pay his huge buyout.
