Antoine Griezmann

has this guy ever really been the star of the France NT? i see people here placing him at the top of the pyramid because he takes penalties.

like with barca, he only shines or does good at most when the opposition is shite. when the chips are down, you have to rely on mbappe, benzema or pogba to make it happen.

He was far better than Mbappe in 2018 (besides the infamous Argentina game). Certainly their best offensive player, but they had a few massive performers (Pogba, Kante, CBs..), which after all was a title winning squad. That's rarely down to 2-3 players - see Messi. And was far better than Mbappe this tournament, he was pretty great in the 2nd half vs Switzerland as well.

No need to be disingenuous even though I am not too fond of him.

they wouldn't have beaten argentina without that mbappe performance. otherwise griezmann stat paded as usual on penalties to make him look like top performer. if he were that good he would have won best player of the competition since france were champions.

far better than mbappe this tournament? by scoring on a rebound vs hungary? don't think you can call him far better on that.

That was probably an exaggeration, sorry for that, but he was better. Was pure quality in the 2nd half vs Switzerland for example.

Well, I watched the world cup and that was Griezmann at his best. Just very sharp touches all over the field. And heck, I think he's been mostly shit for us and want him gone. Nothing to do with Mbappe either. He was far from awe-inspiring in 2018 (bar Argentina as mentioned). And was an utter trainwreck (mostly) this tournament.

Edit: That's at least how I remember things :p

mbappe was not too shabby that game either. had the first assist. only thing that let him down was his finishing and because of his position and status he got the most part of the blame.

griezmann had a good tournament in 2018, clearly his best. but his numbers were inflated by the penalties he took. mbappe was more impressive.

i don't call myself a mbappe fan, an admirer mainly. but i do not like griezmann at all. never liked him before joining us, hated him since he joined. so yeah, i'm biased.

In EURO 2016 he was pretty good if remember correctly  Very strong performance against germany too.

But don't you see your bias though? Mbappe was singlehandling winning penalties with his dribbling alone. Mbappe scored multiple open play goals. Mbappe glided through pretty much almost every single defense in the 6 or so games he played for France. Mbappe was also playing really sharp touches and flicks in the final third, and set up some beautiful chances as well (no look flick in the final comes to mind). Whereas outside of set pieces, Griezmann had 0 end product and yet he's the main reason France won?

Seeing people call Mbappe's WC 2018 overrated and rating Griezmann as the standout player during the tournament after considering all that is just laughable to me. I won't say who's better or worse because I'm obviously biased towards traditional forwards (quick, can dribble, and score open play goals), but the matter of fact is Mbappe had a showing at the tournament many football greats (Messi, Cr7, Laudrup) would kill to have had, and yet here he's being portrayed as some scrub that wasn't even integral to their success. The hatred towards Mbappe in this forum is ridiculously obvious and is clouding the judgment of many users on this forum.

Just sayin'.

I am not talking about numbers. In a certain setup (defensive as fuck with runners in behind like Mbappe and Giroud?) Griezmann is a great player. And 2018 was tailor made for him, hence why I think he was their best player (in transition) and not Mbappe, who certainly wasn't too shabby either. Generally when I watched France and things clicked Griezmann was a big part of that and he looked in control of the team.

But that's all a bit wishy-washy to be fair. I accept other opinions ;-)

EURO 2016 and World Cup 2018 Griezmann was France's main man. They were in the final at both tournaments and Griezmann was very strong. He got Golden Boot in 2016 and Silver Boot in 2018 IIRC.
