A perfect example of catastrophic timing. He came at the worst possible time and left when he would get the freedom to play his game. It couldn't be handled worse. It was moronic to buy him with Messi and Suarez in the team and it was moronic to sell him for nothing when Messi left. I even think he would accept some kind of a different contract since his salary was the biggest problem.

I have analyzed this in the past in a thread.
Even before the Perez mafia (circa 2009) started manipulating the award, some Ballon D'Or decisions are not only suspicious but also laughable
Nedved getting Ballon D Or ahead of Henry, Canavaro ahead of Ronaldinho, Figo in 2000, and others
Shows you that the whole voting thing, apart from easily manipulatable, is shabby
