I'm just waiting for Saturday, 5 July. To watch Federico Fernandez trying to contain Ronaldo on the counter.

How do you guys think the Messi-Ronaldo dynamic will change if Ronaldo eliminates Argentina? I think there will be a significant difference in how people in later years will compare the two in relation to each other.

I guess it depends on whether he directly eliminates him, for example scoring in the game.

If he does it will probably impact the legacy of both, especially if it results in a 3rd ballon dor for Ronaldo.

Ultimately though if he does not go on to win it or do well in the final it won't count for much and will be far less significant.

You're right of course that's why I phrased it as "Ronaldo eliminates Argentina". To be fair, if Portugal were to win, I would think Ronaldo would play a big part, I just can't see Argentina's defence or goalkeeper containing him. Just can't.

It would take a lot more to convince me that the dynamic has changed but the vast majority of football fans are on the fence regarding Messi/Ronaldo and do not think there is a big difference between them. Much likelier to change their tune due to happenings at the grandest stage in football. Who remembers the Zidane hype machine? Almost nobody considered him the best midfielder in 2006, most knew he was way past it but the World Cup changed everything, and all due to that one performance vs star-studded Brazil. Can see the same happening with Ronaldo vs Argentina.

Portugal won't make it out of the group stage :p

I wouldn't mind that actually, I strongly dislike the Portuguese national team, always have.

Argentina really need to avoid counter-attacking teams, Portugal are really one of the biggest threats to them. Luckily, they can most likely avoid the likes of Germany and Brazil until the final where anything can happen.

Portugal wouldn't particularly trouble Argentina. FF's lack of pace or not. Unlike say Germany where you have to deal with Reus, Özil, Götze, Müller all running at you on the break from all over the place, Portugal only have the predictable Ronaldo route. Zabaleta and Mascherano would easily do the job on him. Even Sweden contained him well enough for most of the tie until they had to open up and chase the game and Sweden are a second rate team. Messi, Di Maria, Higuain and Agüero running at Pepe and Bruno Alves with the likes of Meireles "protecting" them in midfield should be much more interesting to watch.

Argentina's defensive frailities are a bit overblown. They haven't really leaked goals throughout their qualifiers. The South American qualifiers are already a good measurement with quality teams like Chile and Uruguay, tough places like Bolivia and without shit on a stick teams like Luxembourg, Northern Ireland, Azerbaidjan or San Marino.

Under Maradona's and Batista's reign it was more a question of overall organisation, workrate, collective pressing. When you work hard collectively you can make up for shit defenders at the back. Barca are doing this all the time. lol

I have to disagree. On the ball, yeah maybe Zabaleta and Mascherano might be able to stop him, but off-the-ball? I highly doubt it. Most of Portugal's goals originate from Nani or Moutinho, who are going to be covered by 'Disco' Rojo and Lady Gago. We all know that Ronaldo is a player of moments, he can do nothing the whole game but still be decisive. Bigger picture, Sweden did not control him at all, he scored 4 goals in 2 games.

I've watched all of Argentina's qualifying games, they haven't faced an organized team like Portugal yet. Uruguay and Chile were a shadow of their 2010/2011 forms during the qualifiers. Also, Argentina's offence is great but with Portugal likely to give up possession, I am unsure how effective the quartet can be.

I'm not saying Portugal are clear favorites, but they fit the profile of a team that would cause the most danger to Argentina.

I should have mentioned that I'm not convinced Portugal will get to the last 8. I think they could lose out to Russia in the last 16.A Messi Ronaldo battle would be pretty intense though.

I'm not sure about that. I don't know much about the USA squad but I don't think that they can beat Portugal to the second spot, or Ghana for that matter.

I think they will make it to the last 16 but Russia or Belgium could easily knock them out there. I really can't see them doing anything significant, although they usually play very well at the Euros or WC.
