Argentina

There doesn't seem to be much change from the previous World Cup - lots of players are young and now coming into their prime, or are 30 at most.

I see you didn't mention Garnacho. I am glad. I know you like him but I really don't rate him (might be anti Man United bias), and think Argentina should really have better options than him, even as a sub.

By the way, 28 is way too big a squad for me, even with 8 games. I don't think that coaches want that many players. 26 was really because of COVID and coaches even said that was too many at times. I know there are a lot more games in general now but 28 players is too much.
The only reason why I followed Garnacho is that he was a profile that was lacking in the national team. He somehow regressed and there are other talent that popped up like Benja Dominguez and Giu Simeone (Julian Alvarez can also play in the LW) that it'll be very hard for him to be considered if he continues this way.

For Copa America 2021, the squad size was 28 so it's not like it's unprecedented. With the amount of games in club football, I wouldn't be surprised if it's 28 players.

True, he has regressed, though it could also be he was playing above his own level at first being an unknown quantity.

Oh yeah, so it was, I forgot it was 28 in that tournament. However, don't you feel that 28 players is too much? I get the feeling coaches prefer a smaller, tighter-knit group. Southgate once alluded to that.

If you have some versatile players, 23-25 is more than enough. With 20-22 outfielders.

I guess it depends on how the World Cup is organized.

The biggest obstacle that I could think of is the yellow card suspensions and even one extra game can derail the whole tournament depending on the amount of yellow cards players accumulate.

Plus there is a possibility of extra time in the extra knockout stage game.

Plus it would be better to have 2 extra Argentines with a WC winner medal :valverde2:

True mate, make some good points there. Good one about the extra winner medals too, lol.

I think squads just seem to be expanding all the time. At some point it's gonna get to a 35 player squad for international competitions, probably in the next 20-30 years,, it's beyond ridiculous.

Agreed.

Even for the WC2030, players will probably need to travel from South America to Europe straight away to the point where it is getting absolutely ridiculous.

We might even get a league phase in international tournaments in the future like how the current CL format is currently.

Yeah that set up for 2030 is insane. FIFA clearly wanted to clear the way for Saudi Arabia getting 2034, and took Africa and South America out of the equation. Corruption.

I don't know if you remember (you seem younger than me) but in the early 00s there was a double group stage in the CL, and this was when squads were smaller than now. It was mental.

Compared to this back in 2018. That was a dark time.

Has the style of play changed compared to the WC 2022?
A lot changed.

The selection of players, the style of play that Scaloni installed that is suited for modern football while maximizing Messi's strengths while covering for his weaknesses at the same time.

Ironically, Sampaoli's assistant was Scaloni for both Sevilla and the Argentine national team so weirdly Sampaoli laid the foundation of Argentina's success

Sorry for snapping at you in the Lewy thread at the weekend mate.

I guess I am just very precious when it comes to the all-time greats, and the pantheon. You didn't even say anything bad or wrong, I just took it the wrong way and went on a rant.

I think Lewy is probably 6-10 best striker ever, quite possibly, just think top 5 is a bit much. But I should have put my point across calmly. Apologies son.

No worries at all.

I only reserve my ire/trolling for the anti-Barca trolls (different than being an opposition fan who doesn't like to see Barca do well), which you definitely aren't one.

Hahaha thanks, yeah you and I have always seemingly got on well.

I just need to take a more relaxed attitude to football, and life in general. It really isn't worth getting all hot under the collar over. Hope you are well.
