Unless they avoid paying the taxes. Would be stupid, but there is a loophole somewhere, but very risky to try and use it after all the issues with Neymar's transfer.

Yeah never mind then, its too much given our budget while we also need a forward and lb back up.

For lb backup we have mathieu. With laporte coming in I can't see him at cb anymore. Situation still uncertain for the rb position. Alves could be gone to make some money at psg or qatar/china. backup cbs would be vermaelen and bartra.

so that leaves us with the backup forward position to fill and maybe a midfielder(highly doubt it).

barca will not give 60 m for defender, well, i hope not

You never know with this board - we gladly gave 19 m. for nothing (Vermaelen).

The thing is - the board brought us in this very pressing situation, where we have to buy a good young CB in what will be a historically overheated market this summer with unbelievable sums of money handed from club to club. It is unacceptable that this hasn't been handled before, because it can be done: Look at Varane at RM, Giménez at ATM, Zouma at Chelsea, Mustafi at Valencia (bought after they sold Mathieu!). There is no rule, that you have to pay overprice to get good CB's with potential - you just have to take a chance at an early stage, and have time and patience to see if it works out.

Right now we have no time to develop a youth-prospect over the next 2-3 years - we need a proven CB who can be a perform in the big games if we have injuries. Pique and Mascherano will play for years to come - we don't need to replace them, but it takes time for young CB's to release their potential. We will end up paying ridiculous money for a CB this summer, and that is the product of bad planning from the sports-department for YEARS. It goes back to when Puyol was declining so it is not like we haven't had the time to find someone.

60 m. would make Laporte the most expensive defender ever! (Untill some pl-club breaks the bank for Stones). It doesn't make any sense to pay that kind of money, we should be smarter than this. The world class defenders today like Boateng, Godin, Pique were bought for 5-14 m. €.
Look at Manchester City: They splashed 40 m. for Mangala and then 45 m. for Otamendi and that didn't secure them a world class defence!

All that said I am not disputing Laporte's skills and potential - he may be the best option for us sporting wise, but hardly anyone is worth the amount of money we might end up spending on him.

He is named as one of City's targets so I doubt we will be able to sign him given the competition.

Yeah, because you would rather go to Man City than the best team in the World, especially when you're doing everything in your power to reach the French NT.

He would walk into their team though, probably earn more, and now there's Pep too. Who are they centre back options? Mangala, Demichelis (LOL), the always injured Kompany,...?
