I'll see everyone ~ the 9th, if not before.
I have to get ready for my upcoming trip to Alaska on the 16th. I'm looking forward to the Espanyol game, on the 9th, with lots of questions about our lineup and roster.
Let's start with offense. Dembélé, Messi, and L. Suarez - that is three.
Let's continue with the back like: Alba, Umtiti, Pique, and Semedo - that is four or seven, so far
What about our midfield: Busquet is a must and so is Iniesta. Roberto on the right flank - that is 3 or 10 total. Obviously the keeper is a given.
That is a 4-3-3. Where does Paulinho come in our plans? If he is a substitute. If so, what about Gomes? He should be in our plans otherwise we could have transferred him for €40M and we changed our minds, at the last minute. What about D. Suarez and Rakitic? Is D. Suarez a substitute for Iniesta and Rakitik for Roberto?
Maybe we should go with a 3-4-3 formation
Umtiti, Mascherano, Pique.
Busquets, Paulinho, Roberto, and Iniesta.
Dembélé, Messi, and L. Suarez.
If so, what about Alba and Semedo and no 4th CB
Maybe we can go with a 4-3-3 in some games and a 3-4-3 in others. Regardless, the three up front are set. Unless we go with a 4-3-2-1 with Dembélé playing a bit back and Luis a bit forward. Who will sub for Messi? Dennis, Dembélé, Iniesta? We know that Paco will sub for Luis or will he? What about Arda? He scored 13 goals with 10 assists last season with a limited playing time.
Will Dembélé sub for Iniesta or Denis will. Will Dennis play on the left flank when Dembélé is subbing for Iniesta? Or we'll go with a 4-4-2. What about Arda?
From my experience, formations are useful at the start or re-start of a game. During the game, when I was playing in amateur leagues, I had no idea what formation I was in (sort of.) I was where I was needed the most (with limitations, of course. I'm exaggerating to make a point.) However, a given formation dictates the type of players you start with.
Mine are not challenges. They are questions I have and wanted to share with you that I will try to resolve during the upcoming games.

PS: My above talk about formations brought some very fond memories of my playing time, when young, in amateur leagues. I used to play right back in a 4-4-2 formations. That changed when I was sent up front, by my coach. We developed very sophisticated signals from my coach when he wanted me to go forward like a certain whistle, hand signals, or the way he kicked the ground.
However, most of the time, if not all the time, my coach used to scream: "Hey moron (me) what in the fuck are you doing back there. Get the fuck up front, now! After that subtle hint, during the game, the 4-4-2 formation changed into something else.
I was tired and the last thing I wanted to do was to go forward again.
