just a question...how is mascherano?
if he hasn't phisical problems and wants to stay with us until june, we don't need other defender (pique, umtiti, vermaelen, mascherano) and we can focus on coutinho or similar...
i don't understand why in this forum a lot of users want to buy players and players and players...
probably just for the taste to buy random.

Our CB situation:
-Umtiti is injured for 2 months.
-Mascherano wanted to leave in January (to China), but the board wants him to stay because of the Umtiti injury. Needless to say that he has been our 2nd best CB this season. He is now apparently thinking about what to do. Can still leave.
-Pique has been poor this season. In addition to that, he tends to pick a card in a lot of games. I suspect that he will be suspended once if not twice until Umtiti comes back.
-Vermaelen is a solid CB, but how can we believe that he can play more than 5-10 games in a row without geting injured. We can't keep relying on a player, who has been sidelined by injuries for 60% of his career.

umtiti will be ready in two months, then we don't need to buy another defender...
pique is still now a defender with class and experience...
if he is not able, we can say the same for thiago silva, company, sergio ramos, chiellini, hummels...
all defenders of great teams that have some phisical problems or gave already the best in their career, but they are still now the best defenders of their teams...
mascherano...depends to his will...
if he wants leave, ok, we needs another defender
if the board convinces him to stay another six months, we have a good backup...
about vermaelen, just a question...
how many clubs have in own team a fourth CB as vermaelen?
i don't think this is a great defender...
but, in my opinion, as fourth CB, he's a good solution...
and we've seen at mestalla.

Pique is still a good CB. But not the best at our club by no means (Sam and Masche are better this year). This season he has been responsible/partly responsible for at least 5 goals that we concieded. Would have been more, if it wasn't for Umtiti, Ter Stegen and Mascherano. He had some real shockers this year, for example the Olympiacos game, where he has seen red because of his own stupidity or Leganes where he was skinned by attackers every time in the 2nd half. He could do with some younger competition for the starting spot.
Also Pique, Masche and Vermaelen are all 30+ defenders and we should slowly start to integrate some younger talents into our squad.
That said, you mentioned Horsey in the post, who is also having a poor season (may this continue), and is also responsible for a lot of goals that Real concieded.

your thought can be right if we speak about the summer session, when all teams restart and the championships are over, but not in january, when we do not will find a player of the same level.
instead we have to hope that pique' can improve his performance.

sure! valverde can insert the best players of cantera when he think will be the right moment, but certainly not in january (or better, not for pique').

Yerry Mina's season in Brazil has ended, so it makes sense to accelerate that transfer in January. Then if he impresses, we can perhaps get De Vrij for free in the summer to replace Masche and Vermaelen.

Vermaelen is good enough to be 4th CB but we can't count on him to stay healthy. That's his main problem. We can just pray that he won't get injured now that we need him the most.

Our situation is different. 2 CBs injured, 1 in poor form and 1 very injury prone. Even when Macherano comes back we will likely to have to play some games with only 1 CB.
Imagine a scenario: Masche comes back. Vermaelen gets injured (quite likely). Pique/Masche is suspended (quite likely). We have 1 CB.
We can win La Liga with Rakitić, Suarez, Gomes... But we can potentially lose it because of having only 2 CB's avalible for a month or more (all it takes for that to happen is another Verminator injury).
